The death of Israel Terhemba Ikyereve, popularly known as New Jerusalem, has thrown Benue State into mourning.

The late gospel singer died at the age of 53, leaving behind a rich legacy of spiritual music that reshaped Tiv Swange rhythms into a powerful gospel tool.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports that Ikyereve’s passing has sent shockwaves across the Christian community in Benue and beyond.

His music was known not only for its lyrical depth but also for its cultural relevance among Tiv-speaking believers.

Former Governor of Benue State, Chief Samuel Ortom, led an emotional tribute during a condolence visit to the late singer’s home in Makurdi.

Ortom was accompanied by members of the Brethren Prayer Group, reflecting the strong Christian ties that bound them.

He described Ikyereve as a devout Christian whose music had global reach and spiritual influence.

According to Ortom, New Jerusalem’s songs once played in the background during a Christian music training session in Australia, led by a fellow Tiv man.

He cited that moment as proof of the international recognition Ikyereve earned through his gospel ministry.

The former governor offered prayers for the family and vowed to support them and the New Jerusalem Gospel Music Troupe even after the burial.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Hon. Iorshagher Ikyereve expressed deep gratitude to Ortom for his continued presence throughout the singer’s illness and after his death.

He also revealed that one of Israel’s sons was named Ortom in recognition of the former governor’s compassionate role in their lives.

The prayer session was led by Rev. Pastor Tor Ujah and Dr. Joseph Antyo, both respected members of the Brethren Prayer Group.

The late singer is survived by his wife, gospel singer Deborah Msendoo Ikyereve, and four children.

His burial will take place on Saturday, July 5, 2025, in Sati Agirigi, Mbamo, Shitile, located in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State.

Ikyereve’s rise in the gospel music scene was marked by his unique ability to blend cultural tunes with evangelical messages.

His transformation of Swange, a traditional Tiv music style, into a gospel genre earned him wide acclaim and made him a beloved figure across churches and gospel events.

Church leaders, fellow musicians, and fans across Nigeria have continued to pour out tributes in his honour.

Many describe him as a rare vessel who used his talent to draw people closer to God through culturally resonant worship.

His legacy is expected to live on through his music troupe, his recordings, and the spiritual impact he made in countless lives.
