Brentford have reached a verbal agreement with West Ham United to sign Senegal international El Hadji Malick Diouf in a deal worth up to £40 million, according to reports.
The proposed transfer will see Brentford pay an initial £35 million for the highly rated left back, with a further £5 million available through add ons. The agreement is yet to be completed formally, but Diouf is expected to sign for the Bees after expressing a strong desire to join the club.
The move would represent another significant investment from Brentford and underline the club’s ambition to strengthen their squad with young players who still have considerable room for development. Diouf has quickly built a reputation as one of Senegal’s most promising young defenders, and his performances in European football and the Premier League have attracted considerable attention.
Born in Senegal in December 2004, Diouf began developing his football career at a young age. He reportedly started playing organised football with Galaxy Football Academy when he was around 13 before continuing his development at Académie Mawade Wade, an institution known for helping young Senegalese talents progress towards professional football.
His journey eventually took him outside Senegal. In 2023, Diouf moved to Norway to join Tromsø after impressing during a trial. The transition was not immediate, but he gradually established himself and gained valuable experience in European football.
After his spell in Norway, Diouf moved to Czech Republic side Slavia Prague in January 2024. It was at Slavia that his reputation began to grow rapidly.
Rather than simply operating as a traditional left back, Diouf developed into an attacking wing back capable of pushing high up the pitch and contributing in the final third. His pace, physical strength, ability to carry the ball and willingness to attack made him particularly effective in Slavia’s system.
During the 2024/25 campaign, he played a key role as Slavia Prague won the Czech First League title. He finished the league season with seven goals and three assists from 24 appearances, numbers that were particularly impressive for a defender.
His performances convinced West Ham to invest heavily in him, with the London club signing the Senegalese defender in July 2025 for a reported £19 million fee.
Diouf then made the difficult step into Premier League football. Despite West Ham struggling during the 2025/26 campaign and eventually suffering relegation, the young defender emerged as one of the club’s more encouraging performers.
He made more than 30 Premier League appearances during his first season in England and contributed five assists, demonstrating that his attacking qualities could translate to the demands of English football.
His performances did not go unnoticed. Interest from other Premier League clubs grew during the summer, with Brentford eventually pushing strongly to secure his services. Earlier in the window, West Ham had resisted approaches for the player and were initially reluctant to consider his departure.
However, Brentford’s persistence appears to have paid off. The latest agreement represents a potentially huge return for West Ham less than two years after they signed the player from Slavia Prague.
For Brentford, Diouf offers a combination of youth, athleticism and attacking ability. The 21 year old is naturally left footed and can operate as a conventional left back or further forward as a left wing back. His versatility could be particularly valuable to Brentford as they continue to develop their squad.
His arrival could also provide additional depth in an area where the Bees have faced fitness concerns. The club have previously had to manage recurring injury problems involving Rico Henry and Aaron Hickey, increasing the importance of having reliable options on the left side.
Internationally, Diouf has also established himself with Senegal. He made his senior debut in September 2024 during an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Burundi and has continued to develop his role with the Teranga Lions. He has already earned international experience despite being only 21.
His Senegalese roots remain an important part of his football identity. His development from youth academies in Senegal to Norway, the Czech Republic, England and now potentially another Premier League club reflects the increasingly international pathway followed by young African footballers seeking opportunities in Europe.
If the formalities are completed, Brentford will have secured one of Senegal’s emerging defensive talents for a package that could rise to £40 million. For Diouf, the transfer represents another major step in a career that has developed remarkably quickly.
From playing academy football in Senegal to becoming a Czech champion and establishing himself in the Premier League, Diouf’s rise has been rapid. A move to Brentford could now give him the opportunity to take another step forward and establish himself as one of the Premier League’s leading young full backs.
The proposed deal also demonstrates the growing value of African talent in European football. For Senegal, Diouf’s continued development provides another reason for optimism as the country continues to produce players capable of competing at the highest levels.
