Buhari’s wife launch health campaign in Yola, 2000 women treated

The wife of the President, Aisha Buhari, on Thursday, launched her pet project in Yola and named it “Aishatu Buhari Women Health Initiative”. The project screened

and treated 2000 of various forms of women related diseases.

Aishatu who came in entourage of the wife of the vice president Dolapo Osinbajo said Breast Cancer, Cervical Cancer, High Blood Pressure are mostly the fast women killer diseases and vowed to help in giving free treatment to women across the country.

She, therefore, called on governments at all levels, corporate bodies and rich Nigerians to assist the downtrodden in the society, particularly the vulnerable women folks in the areas of health provision and other social amenities.

She observed that all hands must be on deck in the fight against six ailments that seriously affect women which include cervical and breast cancer.

Buhari noted that the free screening was organized to create awareness amongst women against the scourge of breast and cervical cancer.

“I am glad to kick start the north east zone of the campaign here in Yola, particularly in this primary school where I had my elementary school 32 years ago.

“The project was first launched in Calabar, Cross River State and we are going to launch it across the geopolitical zones, aimed at bringing awareness on the six women killer diseases. I am therefore calling on state governments, cooperate organizations to help in fighting the scourge of the disease.

“I am delighted to see that women in our numbers today converged, with many going for different health examinations on cervical ,and breast cancers, blood pressure, dental and eye check-up among others,” Aisha Buhari.

Our correspondent reports that over 2,000 women were screened by 40 volunteer doctors, 20 nurses, and 25 record keepers.

However, in an interview, Blessing Yohanna, one of the beneficiaries of the free screening exercise, said she has never heard of cervical cancer/pap smear before. “This is my first time and I learnt so many things, especially how to examine my breast and the benefits of doing Pap smear from time to time,” she said.

She advised other women to come forward and do the test for their health benefits.

Another woman who was screened, Rabi Musa, shared her experience by saying thus:

“They taught me how to examine my breast because I didn’t know how to do it. The doctor told me that when I examine my breast, I should not check only for a cell but for something as strong as a bean seed. 

“Also, I have heard that cervical cancer kills women, but I did not know what it means until now. I will tell other women to try and examine themselves every year and I thank the organisers and hope to see them again next year,” Mrs Musa said.
