The body of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has departed London for his final journey home.

A Nigerian Air Force jet flew the late president’s remains out of the United Kingdom early Tuesday, July 15, before 8 a.m. Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila joined other senior officials on the solemn flight.

Buhari died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at a London hospital after battling an undisclosed illness. He passed away around 4:30 p.m. at the age of 82.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will receive Buhari’s body in Katsina by midday. From there, the remains will be taken to Daura, Buhari’s hometown, for prayers and interment.

In honour of his death, the federal government declared Tuesday, July 15, a public holiday across Nigeria. Official funeral proceedings will follow Islamic rites in Daura.

The burial marks the final chapter for Nigeria’s former military ruler turned civilian president, who served two terms from 2015 to 2023.
