KADUNA, Nigeria — Butchers in Kaduna State have commended Governor Uba Sani for the upgrade of abattoirs across the state, praising the installation of modern cold rooms which they say have significantly reduced meat waste, improved hygiene standards, and boosted their incomes.
The butchers, speaking through their association leadership on Monday, described the abattoir upgrade as a transformative intervention that has addressed long-standing challenges in the meat processing and sale industry. They noted that the provision of cold storage facilities has put an end to the daily loss of unsold meat, which previously resulted in significant financial losses.
According to the butchers, the cold rooms have enabled them to preserve meat for longer periods, allowing them to sell at their own pace rather than being forced to dispose of unsold stock at the end of each day. This has not only increased their earnings but also reduced wastage, contributing to improved food security and public health.
The butchers also highlighted the improved hygiene standards in the upgraded abattoirs, which now feature modern facilities for slaughtering, processing, and handling meat. They said the new environment has enhanced the quality of meat available to consumers, reducing the risk of contamination and foodborne illnesses.
Governor Uba Sani has made the upgrade of abattoirs a key component of his administration’s urban renewal and public health agenda. The project is part of broader efforts to modernise the state’s infrastructure and improve the quality of life for residents.
The butchers expressed their appreciation to the governor for listening to their concerns and for prioritising their welfare. They also called on the government to extend similar upgrades to other abattoirs across the state to ensure that all communities benefit from the initiative.
The Kaduna State Government has assured that the abattoir upgrade programme will be sustained and expanded, with plans to replicate the model in other local government areas. The government also reiterated its commitment to improving the business environment for traders and ensuring the health and safety of consumers.
For now, the butchers have hailed the cold rooms as a game-changer for their trade, and they remain optimistic about the future of the meat industry in Kaduna State.
