The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) has announced a nationwide crackdown on unregistered Point-of-Sale (PoS) operators, effective January 1, 2026.
In a statement, CAC expressed concern over the rising number of PoS businesses operating without official registration, violating the Companies and Allied Matters Act 2020 and Central Bank of Nigeria’s Agent Banking Regulations.
The commission accuses some fintech companies of facilitating this issue by onboarding unregistered agents, posing risks to Nigeria’s financial system and exposing millions, especially small businesses and rural users, to vulnerabilities.
From January 1, 2026, all PoS operators must register with CAC to continue operating.
Security agencies will enforce compliance, and unregistered terminals may be seized or shut down.
Fintechs aiding illegal operations will be reported to the CBN.
