Cameroonian opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary has accused President Paul Biya’s government of launching a campaign of repression and intimidation after the disputed October 12 presidential election.

Tchiroma claimed two of his family members and his personal chef were abducted in Garoua on Wednesday night.

He alleged the incident formed part of a wider effort to silence opposition voices following the contested vote.

“It looks like an open war against the Cameroonian people,” Tchiroma declared in a statement issued on Friday morning.

“They spare nothing  assassinations, repression, and abuses.

They fear the consequences if they leave power, hence the violence of their actions.”

He insisted the abductions would not stop his pursuit of justice. “Yesterday, they kidnapped two members of my family and my personal cook. Do you think you can pressure me with such acts? You are only alienating the people more. I demand their immediate release and that of all who have been arbitrarily detained,” he said.

Tchiroma, who claims victory in the disputed election, accused Biya’s administration of targeting opposition supporters through arrests, harassment, and enforced disappearances.

According to him, the government’s crackdown proves its fear of losing control after decades in power.

Later on Friday, Tchiroma announced that he had left his residence in Garoua and was now under the protection of what he called “loyalist army elements.”

He expressed gratitude to the soldiers he said had ensured his safety.

“I thank the loyalist army for showing patriotism by escorting me to a secure location.

They are currently ensuring my protection,” he said, promising to deliver a public address soon.

The opposition leader urged his supporters to stay strong despite rising tensions and widespread arrests.

“To those who have been detained or kidnapped, hang in there. I will not rest until this regime gives you victory,” he added.

Political observers say tensions in Cameroon have escalated since the controversial election.

Allegations of vote rigging, ballot manipulation, and state-sponsored intimidation have deepened the political divide.

President Biya, who has ruled Cameroon since 1982, has faced mounting criticism from opposition groups accusing him of authoritarianism and human rights violations.

International organizations have also expressed concern over reports of violence, arbitrary arrests, and abductions in the post-election period.

However, the Biya government has yet to respond to the latest accusations from Tchiroma.

Tchiroma’s claims highlight the deepening political crisis in Cameroon, where calls for democratic reform continue to meet fierce resistance from the ruling establishment.
