Nigeria’s hopes of defending their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title came to a painful end on Sunday after the Super Falcons suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Cameroon in a fiercely contested quarter-final in Morocco.
The result was decided by one moment of quality in the first half, as Myriam Maéva Nyadjou Wamen found the net in the 19th minute to give Cameroon a lead they refused to surrender.
For Nigeria, the defeat was particularly disappointing because the Super Falcons had entered the tournament as defending champions and one of the strongest teams in African women’s football. They were also hoping to continue their impressive record at the competition and move one step closer to another continental title.
Instead, Cameroon produced a disciplined performance and held on through sustained Nigerian pressure to book their place in the semi-finals.
The match began with both sides showing plenty of caution, knowing that one mistake could change the direction of the knockout tie. Nigeria attempted to establish control through its midfield while Cameroon looked dangerous whenever it found space to move forward.
The first major disciplinary moment came in the 13th minute when Nigeria defender Michelle Alozie was shown a yellow card.
Six minutes later, Cameroon made the breakthrough.
Nyadjou Wamen stepped up and produced the decisive moment of the match, beating Nigeria goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie to put the Indomitable Lionesses 1-0 ahead.
The early goal immediately changed the complexion of the contest. Cameroon could afford to sit deeper and protect its advantage, while Nigeria had to take greater risks in search of an equaliser.
The Super Falcons tried to respond, but Cameroon remained organised and difficult to break down. The Nigerian attack struggled to create the clear openings needed to bring the game level.
Cameroon also picked up a yellow card in the first half, with Charlene Meyong cautioned in the 36th minute as the physical battle between the two sides intensified.
Nigeria made its first substitution shortly afterwards, with Uchenna Kanu leaving the pitch in the 38th minute as the coaching staff looked for a different attacking approach.
The Super Falcons went into the second half knowing that 45 minutes remained to rescue their campaign.
Nigeria increased the pressure after the restart, attempting to move the ball higher up the pitch and force Cameroon into defensive errors. However, the Cameroonian players continued to defend their narrow advantage with determination.
The match became increasingly physical as Cameroon concentrated on protecting its lead and Nigeria searched for the equaliser.
Cameroon made changes in the second half to maintain its energy and defensive structure, while Nigeria also turned to its bench in an attempt to inject more creativity into the attack.
Toni Payne and Esther Okoronkwo were introduced for Nigeria around the 62nd minute as the Super Falcons sought a way through the Cameroonian defence.
Despite the changes, Nigeria could not find the final pass or finish required to beat the opposition goalkeeper.
Cameroon continued to frustrate the Super Falcons, defending in numbers whenever necessary and looking for opportunities to slow the game down.
As the clock moved towards the final 20 minutes, the pressure on Nigeria increased. The Super Falcons knew that another goal would send the contest into extra time if they could find it, but Cameroon remained composed.
The Cameroonian defence successfully dealt with Nigeria’s attempts to create danger around the penalty area, while their midfielders worked hard to prevent the Super Falcons from building sustained attacks.
The final minutes were tense, with Nigeria throwing more players forward in search of an equaliser.
Even the introduction of veteran forward Asisat Oshoala in stoppage time could not change the outcome. Cameroon continued to hold firm until the referee’s final whistle.
When the game ended, the celebrations belonged to Cameroon.
For the Indomitable Lionesses, the 1-0 victory was a major statement. They eliminated one of the tournament favourites and secured their place in the WAFCON semi-finals, where they will face hosts Morocco after Morocco defeated South Africa 2-1 in their own quarter-final.
For Nigeria, however, the defeat brought an unexpectedly early end to their title defence.
The Super Falcons had shown promising attacking form earlier in the tournament, including a convincing 6-2 victory over Egypt in the group stage. That result had raised hopes that Nigeria could go deep into the competition and potentially retain the trophy.
Those hopes disappeared in Casablanca, where one goal proved enough to separate two teams that fought hard throughout the contest.
The defeat also carries significant consequences for Nigeria’s World Cup ambitions. Cameroon’s victory secured qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, while Nigeria lost the automatic World Cup qualification opportunity attached to progressing through this stage of the WAFCON.
Nigeria’s elimination is also notable given the country’s extraordinary history in the women’s continental championship. The Super Falcons remain Africa’s most successful team in the competition, but their remarkable run of reaching the latter stages has now been interrupted at the quarter-final stage.
For Nyadjou Wamen, meanwhile, the night will be remembered for her decisive contribution. Her 19th-minute goal gave Cameroon the platform they needed, and the rest of the team did the hard work of protecting that advantage.
The final score may have been only 1-0, but the result carries enormous significance for both countries.
Cameroon are moving forward with their confidence boosted by one of the biggest victories of the tournament, while Nigeria must now reflect on what went wrong and begin looking ahead to the next challenge.
For the Super Falcons, a campaign that began with ambitions of retaining the African crown has ended in disappointment.
For Cameroon, the dream of winning the continental title remains very much alive.
