Chelsea’s Tosin Adarabioyo eyes Super Eagles call-up after England snub

Chelsea central defender Tosin Adarabioyo has expressed his desire to represent Nigeria, a move that could bolster the team’s defensive options.

As interim Super Eagles coach Augustine Eguavoen prepares to announce the squad for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Libya in October, Adarabioyo’s potential inclusion has been made public.

Adarabioyo’s international aspirations are influenced by several factors.

Born in London, he has previously represented England’s youth teams but hasn’t played for them since 2015.

Nigeria’s defensive needs are another crucial factor. The team seeks younger defenders to complement the aging central duo of William Troost-Ekong and Semi Ajayi.

Coach Eguavoen faces a dilemma in balancing experience with youthful energy.

As he evaluates European-based players, Adarabioyo potential inclusion raises hopes for an improved defense.

Football administrator David Doherty praised Adarabioyo’s potential commitment, citing his prime age and profile boost for the team.

Football analyst Tunde Adelakun noted, “Tosin Adarabioyo’s potential inclusion would be a massive boost for Nigeria’s defense.”

Who is Adarabioyo?

Born on September 24, 1997, Adarabioyo began his youth career at Manchester City Academy in 2005.

He progressed through the ranks, eventually signing a professional contract with Manchester City in 2015.

However, to gain first-team experience, Adarabioyo embarked on a series of loan spells to West Bromwich Albion, Blackburn Rovers, and Fulham FC.

Adarabioyo’s loan stints proved instrumental in his development, particularly during his time at Blackburn Rovers and Fulham FC.

At Blackburn, he made 24 appearances and scored two goals in the 2017-2018 season. His impressive performances earned him a permanent move to Blackburn in 2019.

After a successful season, Adarabioyo joined Fulham FC permanently in 2020.

He made 63 appearances and scored two goals for Fulham, showcasing his growth into a reliable and skilled defender.

The defender joined Chelsea Football Club in the 2024 summer transfer window.

His international career is also noteworthy. He represented England’s youth teams, participating in the UEFA European Under-17 Championship in 2014.
