Chinese Court Sentences Top Politician in $37M Bribery Scandal

The Wang Yong bribery sentence has shocked China, highlighting the scale of corruption uncovered in recent years.
On Tuesday, July 8, 2025, the Chenzhou Intermediate People’s Court in Hunan Province announced that Wang Yong, a former senior government official, has been sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve for accepting massive bribes.
The court also stripped Wang of his political rights for life and ordered the confiscation of all his personal assets. Authorities will transfer his illegal gains and related interests to the state treasury.
Between 2007 and 2023, Wang held multiple high-ranking positions.
These included director of the Policy and Regulations Department at the Civil Aviation Administration of China Southwest Regional Administration and Party Secretary of the Civil Aviation Safety Supervision Bureau of Guizhou Province.
Most recently, he served as vice-chairman of the Xizang Autonomous Region Government.
In these roles, Wang influenced project approvals, airport construction contracts, and other government dealings to benefit private interests.
During this period, Wang accepted bribes totaling more than 271 million yuan (approximately $37.8 million). The court described the amount as “extremely large” and said his actions severely harmed public trust and national interests.
Despite the gravity of the crime, Wang cooperated fully with the investigation. He confessed, expressed deep remorse, and returned all the illegal proceeds.
These actions contributed to the court’s decision to issue a suspended death sentence instead of immediate execution.
On May 15, the public trial drew more than 40 observers. Prosecutors presented extensive evidence, and Wang openly admitted guilt in his final statement.
Under Chinese law, a suspended death sentence typically results in life imprisonment if the individual refrains from further crimes during the two-year reprieve. Good behavior after that period can lead to a reduced prison term.
The Wang Yong bribery sentence adds to a growing list of high-profile prosecutions under China’s anti-corruption campaign. The government continues to emphasize its resolve to eliminate corruption at all levels of public service.
