The Coalition for the Protection of Democracy (COPDEM) has taken a significant step forward in its political engagement and grassroots mobilization strategy with the hosting of its first-ever physical meeting for Local Government Area (LGA) Chairmen in Anambra State.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the meeting, which took place at the residence of Hon. Ambassador Justin Kingland in Agulu, Anaocha Local Government Area, marked a new chapter in COPDEM’s organizational development since its emergence as a key democratic pressure group in Nigeria.

Hon. Kingland, who serves as the National Head of Grassroots Mobilization for COPDEM, convened the gathering to bring together the 21 LGA Chairmen of the movement across Anambra State.

He explained that the meeting was designed to solidify strategies ahead of the forthcoming statewide inauguration and mass rally scheduled to hold in Nnewi on Sunday, 10th August 2025.

He noted that while the organization had been holding virtual meetings since 2023, the physical convergence was long overdue and necessary to demonstrate the commitment of members to the core objectives of the coalition.

“This physical meeting marks a new phase,” Hon. Kingland said. “Since 2023, we’ve been meeting virtually, so meeting physically today is a great move and a show of dedication.

This gathering is a sign of commitment and shared vision. We are here to brainstorm on how to make the inauguration a symbolic and powerful event.”

According to him, the meeting had three major agenda items: planning for a successful and colorful inauguration, reinforcing unity and structure within COPDEM, and boosting grassroots mobilization in support of Apex Leader, His Excellency Mr. Peter Obi.

The coalition also used the opportunity to announce that it had officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), adopting the political party as COPDEM’s grassroots platform.

The agreement aligns both organizations under the shared values of democracy, good governance, and people-focused leadership.

During the deliberations, several LGA Chairmen shared their optimism and reaffirmed their loyalty to the coalition’s mission.

Onitsha South COPDEM Chairman, Comrade David Chukwudifo, remarked, “The essence of COPDEM is to defend democracy and promote good governance in Nigeria.

As it stands, we have no other leader in view except Mr. Peter Obi, who embodies the vision and ideals we stand for.”

Similarly, Comrade Nnoli, the Anaocha COPDEM Chairman, emphasized the importance of maintaining democratic accountability. “COPDEM exists to counter anti-democratic narratives and actions.

We must speak truth to power and remind the government of their duty to uphold the will of the people,” he said.

Hon. Kingland also confirmed that preparations for the grand inauguration of over 3,480 COPDEM executives at both the LGA and Ward levels have been finalized.

The event, alongside a mass democratic rally, is scheduled to take place at ANAEDO Hall, Nnewi, on August 10, 2025.

In his concluding remarks, Hon. Kingland reiterated COPDEM’s unwavering stance on democratic values and support for credible leadership. “COPDEM stands for truth, justice, and the people.

We will always support any candidate who embodies democratic values, and that is why we have chosen to support His Excellency Mr. Peter Obi, a man who truly desires to see Nigeria work.”

The Coalition for the Protection of Democracy was formed in response to growing concerns over the erosion of democratic principles in Nigeria, particularly after the controversial outcomes of the 2023 general elections.

Since then, the group has positioned itself as a pro-democracy movement focused on civic education, grassroots mobilization, and defending electoral justice.

COPDEM continues to expand its presence across Nigeria, with its registration portal open to all interested citizens via https://copdem.org/register.

The Agulu meeting is expected to further energize the coalition’s efforts in building a united political front rooted in justice, accountability, and the collective will of the people.
