Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, has taken a fresh swipe at former Vice-President and African Democratic Congress presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, as well as former Rivers State Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, over the renewed debate on petrol subsidy. Reacting to Atiku’s proposal to reintroduce a targeted subsidy tied to locally refined petroleum products if elected president in 2027, Sowore accused Atiku and Amaechi of taking nearly a decade to embrace a position he says the AAC has consistently maintained. Sowore argued that Nigerians have already paid a heavy price for the removal of petrol subsidy, accusing the political establishment of only acknowledging the consequences after millions of citizens have been pushed into deeper economic hardship. Atiku, however, says his proposed model would be different from the old subsidy system, with government support focused on domestic refining, preferential crude supply, strict fiscal limits and independent monitoring.
