A 41-year-old man, Baridapsi Needam, has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for raping and impregnating his 14-year-old daughter.

The presiding judge, Justice D.E Adokeme, delivered the judgement on June 29, 2024, after the prosecution presented credible evidence, including a DNA report that confirmed the defendant’s paternity with 99.99% certainty.

The prosecution, led by Pere Amanda Egbuson, Deputy Director in the Bayelsa State Ministry of Justice, revealed that the defendant began sexually abusing his daughter at the age of seven and continued until she became pregnant in 2022.

The court ruled that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and sentenced the defendant to 14 years in prison.

The lead prosecuting counsel, Pere Amanda Egbuson, hailed the judgement as a deterrent to others who engage in such heinous acts, while Dr Dise Ogbise Goddy Harry, a prominent advocate against violence against women, praised the Bayelsa State Government and the judiciary for keeping the victim and her baby safe.

The judgement sends a strong message that the court will not tolerate such acts, and paedophiles must stay clear of children.”
