Dangiwa: Over 75% of Houses for Naija Substandard, Seek Help from UN-Habitat

Di Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, don disclose say about 75 percent of houses for Naija dey substandard, calling for increased support and collaboration from di UN-Habitat organization.

As e dey talk during one working lunch with di new Executive Director of UN-Habitat, Ms. Anaclaudia Rossbach, on di sidelines of di 2nd Session of di 2024 UN-Habitat executive board meeting for Nairobi, di minister emphasizes di urgency of addressing Naija housing and urban challenges.

E underscore di critical state of housing for Naija, noting say over 75 percent of di country’s 42 million housing units no dey up to standard, with nearly half of di population dey live for informal settlements.

To address these challenges, e highlight di federal government’s National Urban Renewal and Slum Upgrade Programme (NURSUP), wey don complete projects for 54 sites nationwide, with 56 additional projects underway.

These efforts, according to one statement by him spokesman, Mark Chieshe, aim to improve essential infrastructure like water supply, solar-powered streetlights, access roads, drainage systems, and waste management solutions.

Di minister stress di importance of robust partnerships with international organizations like UN-Habitat to scale up these initiatives.

“Our collaboration with UN-Habitat dey critical. With your support, we aim to expand and enhance Naija National Urban Renewal and Slum Upgrade Programme to deliver transformative outcomes for our pipo,” e talk.

As part of Naija commitment to di global urban agenda, Dangiwa announce plans to host di country’s first National Urban Forum for June or July 2025.

Di forum, e talk, go bring togeda stakeholders including government representatives, urban planners, developers, civil society organizations, and development partners to discuss Naija urban development strategies.

“Naija Renewed Hope Agenda align with di global urban agenda, and we dey committed to driving meaningful change through partnerships with organizations like UN-Habitat,” di minister talk.

E express optimism in finalizing one comprehensive partnership framework within six months, with plans to sign di agreement during di National Urban Forum.

For her remarks, Rossbach praise Naija leadership role in urbanization and di Federal Government’s contributions to UN-Habitat initiatives, including $3 million toward di African Urban Agenda Programme (2013–2016).

Ahmed Musa Dangiwa

Ahmed Musa Dangiwa na Naija architect and politician wey don serve as di Minister of Housing and Urban Development since 2023.

E serve as Managing Director of di Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria from 2015 to 2022.

Dangiwa get qualifications from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where e obtain Bachelor’s in Architecture, MSc in Architecture (Arc), and MBA.

E also study for di Wharton School of di University of Pennsylvania.

For 1988, Dangiwa get association with Katsina State Polytechnic as consulting architect.

E be member of multiple professional bodies, including di Naija Institute of Architects (NIA) and di American Institute of Architects (AAIA).

From 2017 to 2022, Dangiwa be di head of di Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN), where e oversee reforms.

E previously lead am Design Consults and Jarlo International and get roles for TRIAD Associates and Sahel Mortgage Finance Bank.

For 2022, Dangiwa seek di All-Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship ticket for Katsina State.

E later become involved with di Tinubu, Dikko Campaign Council for di 2023 elections.

Afta di elections, dem appoint am Secretary to di Katsina State Government and then e receive ministerial nomination.

Dangiwa start him career for TRIAD Associates then manager partner of AM Design Consults; wey be architectural and real estate development consultancy firm, di Jarlo International Nig LTD.

A construction company and Sahel Mortgage Finance Limited. E excel as mortgage finance practitioner.

E rise through di ranks for Sahel Mortgage Finance Limited from property manager to Head of Credit Control to becoming di manager of di mortgage Banking Division.

E be member of professional bodies such as senior associate member of Risk manager associate of Nigeria (RIMAN), fellow of di Institute of credit administration (FICA) and Institute of strategic customer service and trade management (ICSTM).

E be honorary fellow of chartered institute of loan and risk management of Nigeria (CILRM) and honorary senior member of chartered institute of bankers of Nigeria (CIBN).
