Ndume: “Don’t burden the poor with more taxes, FG”
Senator Ali Ndume, the representative of Borno South at the National Assembly has urged the Federal Government not to burden the poor with more taxes.
Speaking on On ARISE Television’s Prime Time show, Ndume emphasized the need for the Federal Government to reassess its taxation policies to protect vulnerable Nigerians.
Reacting to the tax reform bills currently before the National Assembly, the senator stresses that increasing taxes on vulnerable Nigerians is unacceptable and instead recommends targeting wealthy individuals and corporations.
He said, “the government should target the rich individuals and corporations rather than Nigerians living in abject poverty.”
According to the Diaspora Digital Media (DDM), Ndume disclosed that he is not in support of the tax increase because the poor Nigerians are suffering.
“Nigeria has almost gotten to the stage of not having the middle class again. It is either you are rich or you are poor.”
“The nation’s middle class is being severely impacted, and increasing taxes would only worsen their struggles.”
“Given the current economic condition, it’s crucial to consider the affordability of taxes for Nigerians. If the population can bear the tax burden, then it’s acceptable.”
“However, in the present situation, raising taxes is not a viable solution and would only worsen the economic hardship faced by many,” Ndume stated.
“Let us prioritize creating an environment where citizens can thrive, not just exist”
“There should be an economic growth that generates surplus income, enabling people to live comfortably beyond mere subsistence.”
“Considering the North’s significant poverty levels, future tax increases require thoughtful consideration.”
“We must prioritize progressive taxation, targeting affluent individuals and corporations to ensure fairness and alleviate the burden on vulnerable populations.”
“I’m beginning my campaign against the increase in tax because it doesn’t only affect the northerners but affects the average Nigerian,” Ndume disclosed
“I’m not kicking against people paying tax, but don’t tax people that are struggling to survive.”
“Let the tax authority focus on those that if they pay, can not in anyways affect them,” DailyPost reported.
