Nigeria’s reputation as one of Africa’s leading producers of football talent received another major boost after Lagos based football academy Dazzle FC enjoyed a historic outing at the 2026 Dana Cup in Denmark, with the club’s Under 12 team lifting the championship trophy while the Under 14 side finished as runners up in one of the world’s biggest youth football competitions.
The outstanding performances by both teams have drawn widespread praise from football enthusiasts, coaches and talent scouts, further highlighting the immense potential that continues to emerge from grassroots football across Nigeria.
Held annually in Hjørring, Denmark, the Dana Cup is regarded as one of the largest and most prestigious international youth football tournaments. The 2026 edition attracted 946 teams from 56 countries, with almost 30,000 players, coaches and officials participating in more than 2,600 matches played across 62 football pitches.
Competing against elite youth academies from Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas, Dazzle FC demonstrated exceptional quality, discipline and determination throughout the tournament.
The academy’s Under 12 side delivered one of the most dominant campaigns witnessed at this year’s competition. The young Nigerians won all nine of their matches, scoring an astonishing 56 goals while conceding only six throughout the tournament. Their attacking football, tactical discipline and confidence quickly made them one of the standout teams at the championship.
Dazzle FC announced their arrival with an emphatic 17 nil victory over Germany’s SV Schwansen before recording several more convincing wins during the group stage. Their relentless attacking style thrilled spectators and attracted admiration from coaches representing clubs across different continents.
The knockout rounds proved more demanding, but the Nigerian youngsters continued to display maturity beyond their years. They overcame Brazilian side RS Sports 2-1 in a tense semifinal to secure a place in the championship match against Mexican club IFAC.
The final was fiercely contested, with both teams displaying outstanding defensive organization. After regulation time failed to separate them, Dazzle FC maintained their composure during extra time. A decisive strike from Akinremi Abdullahi sealed a memorable 1-0 victory, handing the Lagos academy its first ever Dana Cup title and sparking jubilant celebrations among players, coaches and supporters.
While the Under 12 team celebrated championship glory, the academy’s Under 14 side also produced an impressive campaign that showcased the depth of talent within the club.
The older age group progressed confidently through the group stages before battling their way into the Play Off final through a series of determined performances. Their journey demonstrated resilience, teamwork and technical quality against strong international opposition.
In the final, Dazzle FC faced Palestinian side Rawahel in another tightly contested encounter. Both teams remained inseparable after normal time, forcing the match into a penalty shootout. Despite an outstanding effort, the Nigerian side narrowly lost 5-3 on penalties to settle for the runners up position.
Although they missed out on the trophy, the team’s performances throughout the tournament earned widespread admiration. Goalkeeper Ojerinde Toheeb emerged as one of the competition’s standout players after producing several match winning saves during the tournament. He kept three clean sheets in five matches and was deservedly named the Best Player in the Under 14 category, an individual honour that reflected his consistency and leadership between the posts. �
