Delta State Mourns as Ohworode of Olomu Joins His Ancestors

The Ohworode of Olomu Kingdom, His Royal Majesty Uhurhie-Osadjere II, has passed away just two years after taking the throne.
The ancient kingdom, located in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, has declared a full month of mourning in response to the monarch’s death.
His passing was officially announced at the palace in Ovwor-Olomu on Saturday, July 12, 2025.
The Otota of Olomu Kingdom, Olorogun Albert Akpomudje (SAN), made the announcement on behalf of the traditional council.
He was flanked by palace chiefs and family members of the late ruler.
The monarch, who ascended the throne on May 20, 2023, reportedly joined his ancestors late Friday night.
His death has left the kingdom in shock and sorrow, marking the end of a short but impactful reign.
Immediately after the news broke, Olomu Kingdom ordered all community markets to shut down.
Shops are allowed to operate partially, but traditional rites such as burials and weddings have been suspended during the mourning period.
According to palace directives, the kingdom will observe a mourning period from July 12 to August 12, 2025.
During this time, traditional chiefs will honor the late king by wearing black bands on their left arms and forgoing the symbolic red Olomu Chieftaincy caps.
This gesture, the council said, symbolizes humility, grief, and respect for the departed monarch.
Sources in the kingdom noted that Ohworode Uhurhie-Osadjere II had earned the respect of both his people and outsiders for his wisdom and efforts to unify the communities under his leadership.
His short reign, though brief, was marked by cultural revival and active engagement with both political and traditional stakeholders.
Residents and traders expressed sadness at the sudden loss, with many describing the monarch as a peacemaker. Tributes continue to pour in from across Delta State and beyond.
As tradition demands, further details on funeral arrangements and royal succession will be announced in the coming weeks.
