Domestic violence: Enugu govt vows to prosecute man who cut off wife’s hand

Enugu state government has condemned the vicious attack on Mrs. Chinonso Echegi, whose hand was chopped off by her husband, Mr. Sunday Onyeahanachi Echegi, during a domestic dispute.

The unfortunate incident occurred in Ibagwa Ani, Nsukka Local Government Area of the State.

Authorities have arrested the suspect, while the victim is receiving treatment at the Enugu State Teaching Hospital.

In a terse statement, the Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development, Ngozi Enih described the incident as horrific and reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring justice.

During a visit at the hospital to see the victim, Enih stressed that the attack was a stark reminder of the urgent need to combat gender-based violence in the state.

She assured the general public that the government is taking decisive action to hold the perpetrator accountable, warning that Enugu State has zero tolerance for violence against women.

The commissioner also called on community leaders and stakeholders to join efforts in raising awareness and supporting survivors.

However, while reiterating that gender-based violence is a societal issue that affects families and communities, Enih urged residents to work together to create a safer and more equitable society.

She assured that the government would not hesitate to prosecute offenders and ensure that justice prevails.
