Don’t Fight Back” — Gov Alia warns indigenes as Fulani herdsmen continue killing spree

Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has warned residents against taking laws into their hands.
The governor issued the warning following fresh attacks that killed 17 people in Ukum and Logo local government areas.
According to reports, Alia gave the warning on Good Friday after Mass at Holy Ghost Parish in Makurdi.
He confirmed five deaths in Ukum and expressed concern over rising violence in the Sankera axis.
The governor condemned the killings and urged residents to avoid vigilante justice or revenge actions.
He assured citizens of the government’s commitment to ending the attacks through coordinated security efforts.
“The pain is real, but we must never take laws into our hands,” Alia told journalists.
He said the state is working with the Office of the National Security Adviser to develop a counter-terrorism strategy.
Alia said this strategy aims to stop the killings and restore peace to affected communities.
On April 17, gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen attacked Gbagir in Ukum Local Government.
Police reports confirmed that five persons died in that attack.
Another group simultaneously struck Logo Local Government, leaving 12 people dead.
Police spokesperson, SP Sewuese Anene, said tactical teams responded swiftly to the attacks.
She explained that the attackers were pushed back towards Taraba State forest, a known militia hideout.
Anene said the police received intelligence before the attack and acted promptly.
She emphasized the role of community collaboration in aiding security agencies.
Governor Alia echoed that position and urged residents to share credible information with authorities.
He praised the locals who helped prevent more casualties in Ukum through early warnings.
Alia promised stronger cooperation with federal intelligence and improved local surveillance systems.
He stated that his administration will prioritize rural development and agricultural protection in vulnerable areas.
He also assured residents of ongoing reforms in the state’s internal security setup.
Alia called on community leaders to promote peace and discourage violence.
He said his government remains committed to rebuilding trust and protecting lives in all parts of the state.
The governor stressed that security remains a top priority for his administration.
He encouraged residents to remain calm and report any suspicious activities promptly.
