Dr. Shamsudeen Usman to Launch Book and Unveil Foundation in Landmark Event in Abuja

A press conference was held today in Abuja to announce the upcoming launch of a significant book and the unveiling of the Shamsudeen Usman Foundation, both scheduled for September 26, 2024. The press briefing was addressed by Mr. Sadiq Usman, Chairman of the Planning Committee for the event.

Mr. Usman provided an overview of Dr. Shamsudeen Usman’s illustrious career, underscoring his contributions to Nigeria’s economic and financial sectors. Dr. Usman, a well-known figure in the country, has held several key positions, including Minister of Finance and National Planning, Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, and Managing Director of NAL Merchant Bank (now Sterling Bank). His extensive academic background includes a BSc in Economics from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and both MSc and PhD in Economics from the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Dr. Usman, who will turn 75 on September 18, 2024, is also recognized for his philanthropic efforts, particularly through the establishment of the Gidauniyar Alheri Community Health Centre in Kano State and the Gidauniyar Alheri Microfinance Bank. The health center, in collaboration with Doctors Without Borders, has made a significant impact on maternal and neonatal care in the region.

The Shamsudeen Usman Foundation, founded by Dr. Usman’s children, is dedicated to promoting education in Nigeria. Its flagship project will be the establishment of an AI and Technology Development Centre focused on skills development, innovation, and economic growth. Mr. Usman also provided insights into the book Public Policy and Agent Interests: Perspectives from the Emerging World, co-authored by Dr. Usman and other accomplished Nigerian technocrats. The book offers a comprehensive analysis of the challenges and opportunities in public policy and economic management in emerging economies, with a particular focus on Nigeria. It explores the interactions between government agencies and the private sector and their impact on national development.

The book is expected to serve as a valuable reference for policymakers, academics, and business leaders, providing a deeper understanding of governance and the complexities of public policy formulation and implementation.

The press conference concluded with details about the event, which is expected to be attended by numerous dignitaries, including His Excellency, Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima, who will serve as the Special Guest of Honour, and former President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, who will chair the occasion. Other expected attendees include former Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, various state governors, senators, traditional rulers, and senior political and business leaders.
