Editorial: Masking bad governance with forceful clampdown
The Nigerian government’s treatment of of #EndBadGovernance protesters, including Michael Lenin, Mosiu Sodiq, and Eleojo Opaluwa, is a blatant affront to the rule of law.
Plus, the postponement of their arraignment, amidst a heavy security presence, only serves to further prolong their sufferings in the hands of an administration that has failed in every index of governance.
The arrest of these protesters, detained for two weeks without charge, is a gross violation of their fundamental human rights.
It is nothing short of an attempt to intimidate and silence those who dare to challenge the status quo.
Amnesty International’s condemnation of the arbitrary detention of these protesters is a clear indication that the international community is very much aware of the shameful leadership of the Bola Tinubu misrule.
We demand the immediate release of Michael Lenin, Mosiu Sodiq, and Eleojo Opaluwa, as well as all other protesters detained for exercising their constitutional right to free speech and assembly.
We urge the Nigerian government to respect the rule of law and uphold the democratic principles enshrined in the constitution.
The silencing of dissenting voices will not solve the country’s problems; it will only exacerbate them.
We call on all Nigerians to stand in solidarity with these brave protesters and demand a government that truly represents the people, not just the interests of those in power.
