Edo court sentences four to death over kidnapping, cultism

An Edo State High Court sitting in Benin City has sentenced four people to death by hanging for kidnapping and membership of a secret cult.

Justice T. A. Momodu handed down the verdict after more than three hours of proceedings on an 11-count charge against the convicts.

The court, which is dedicated to cases involving kidnapping, cultism and other violent crimes, delivered the judgment on Tuesday.

Those sentenced to death are Marvelous Isaac, 32; Wisdom Michael, 36; Rufus Michael, 30; and Gift Raphael, 27.

The court found the four guilty of offences linked to kidnapping and cult membership.

A group known as Polling Unit To Collation Center Movement, PUTCCM, has issued a strong and controversial warning to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, and other political stakeholders ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, declaring that Nigerians will not accept any attempt to manipulate the outcome of their votes. The group further reacted to comments by Mr Segun Showunmi concerning the announcement of election results, while calling on all political parties, electoral officials and other stakeholders to respect the people's mandate and avoid actions capable of triggering tension ahead of the polls. PUTCCM also cautioned Nigerian youths against participating in electoral malpractice, urging them to reject vote buying, ballot manipulation and other forms of electoral misconduct. It called on security agencies to remain professional, impartial and committed to protecting voters and ensuring a peaceful electoral process.
