#EdoDecides: How Police forced Obaseki out of INEC office amidst controversy
Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State was, on September 22, 2024, forcibly removed from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office by state police officers in a shocking twist of events.
According to Daily Trust Reports, Obaseki arrived at INEC office around 3:00 AM on the said day, accompanied by his security details, for a closed-door meeting.
However, his presence sparked protests from members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), led by Mr. Ajibola Basiru, the party’s national secretary, and Mr. Dennis Idahosa, the deputy governorship candidate.
Armed security operatives led by Deputy Inspector-General of Police Frank Mba prevented the protesters from entering the INEC premises, as tensions rose.
Despite this, Obaseki’s presence fueled accusations of electoral interference.
Obaseki and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Mr. Asue Ighodalo, alleged that the police and INEC were compromising the electoral process in favor of APC.
The incident raised concerns about the fairness and transparency of the electoral process in the state.
This development has significant implications for the recently held state’s election and democratic process.
The incident sparked widespread condemnation, with many calling for calm and urged the electoral authorities to ensure a free and fair election.
