Ilorin, Nigeria – The Emir of Ilorin, Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, has strongly condemned the rising cases of gender-based violence (GBV) in Nigeria.

He described it as a grave societal challenge that violates fundamental cultural and religious principles of compassion, justice, and the protection of the vulnerable.

Notably, the emir made this statement during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Ilorin, Kwara State, on Wednesday.

The Brain Builders Youth Development Initiative (BBYDI) actively organised the event under the theme “Mobilising Stakeholders for Action Against GBV in Kwara.

The meeting drew a diverse range of stakeholders; notably, traditional rulers, government officials, and community leaders actively participated.

Additionally, civil society actors, security agencies, and media representatives contributed valuable insights throughout the discussions.

Al-Haeri Abdulwahab, the Daudu Jeje of Ilorin, represented the emir and highlighted how GBV directly undermines victims’ dignity and security.

Additionally, he stressed its detrimental impact on families and entire communities.

Sulu-Gambari, as a leader and custodian of tradition, asserted, “We bear a profound responsibility to transform our communities into havens of peace, respect, and equality.”

This statement reinforced the collective commitment to addressing GBV effectively.

He further urged traditional rulers to take an active role in combating GBV.

Additionally, he called for collective efforts to prevent violence, support survivors, and foster lasting societal change.

Launch of GBV Advocacy Toolkit

The event featured the launch of key resources developed by BBYDI to aid in the fight against GBV.

These include a fact sheet, an issue brief, and a comprehensive GBV prevention and advocacy toolkit.

Abideen Olasupo, BBYDI’s global director, emphasized the significance of these resources.

He explained that the toolkit provides practical strategies for violence prevention, survivor support, and societal transformation.

Describing the toolkit as a “timely and vital resource,” Sulu-Gambari commended its focus on partnership and community engagement.

He called on traditional rulers to adopt the toolkit’s guidance in their respective domains to challenge harmful norms and empower both men and women to be active participants in ending GBV.

“This toolkit is a call to action,” the emir remarked.

“I encourage every traditional ruler to embrace its guidance, adapt it to their unique contexts, and commit to a future where violence has no place in our homes, our streets, or our hearts.”

Government Commitment to Tackling GBV

Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to addressing GBV through policy enforcement, legal action, and community-driven initiatives.

Represented by Lawal Olohungbebe, his senior special assistant on community development, the governor acknowledged that GBV is not only a criminal offence but also a deeply entrenched societal problem requiring collaborative action from all sectors.

Governor Abdulrazaq commended BBYDI for its advocacy efforts aimed at creating a safer and more inclusive society in Kwara State. He also highlighted the need for government agencies, traditional leaders, and civil society organisations to work together in combating GBV.

First Lady Olufolake Abdulrazaq also lent her voice to the cause, describing GBV as a pressing issue that demands urgent attention. She expressed her support for initiatives aimed at protecting the rights and dignity of women and girls.

BBYDI’s Advocacy Efforts

In her welcome address, Nura Jimoh-Sanni, BBYDI’s executive director, reiterated the organisation’s commitment to combating GBV.

She emphasized BBYDI’s extensive efforts over the past year. These efforts included one-on-one engagements with traditional rulers across Kwara State, GBV prevention workshops for high chiefs in each senatorial district, and advocacy programs aired on radio.

Additionally, Jimoh-Sanni referenced a recent tragic incident in Ilorin. The murder of Hafsoh Lawal by Abdulrahman Bello serves as a painful reminder of the urgent need for action against GBV. “The murder of Hafsoh Lawal is not just a personal or family issue; it is a societal crisis that demands urgent and collective action,” she stated.

Furthermore, she commended both the Kwara State Traditional Council and the council of Ulama for their valuable support. Their commitment greatly aids in addressing GBV through impactful community engagement initiatives.

A Call for Collective Action

The stakeholders’ meeting concluded with a unified call for action against GBV. Traditional rulers pledged to leverage their influence to challenge harmful societal norms and practices. Government representatives reiterated their commitment to enforcing policies that protect vulnerable individuals. Civil society actors pledged continued advocacy to ensure survivors receive justice and support.

The Emir of Ilorin summed up the collective resolve by urging all stakeholders to honour their responsibilities as leaders: “Let us create a legacy of peace, dignity, and progress. Together, we can ensure that violence has no place in our communities.”

As Kwara State continues its fight against GBV, stakeholders hope that this collaborative approach will serve as a model for other regions across Nigeria.
