The dream of a home triumph at the 2026 FIFA World Cup has come to an end after all three tournament co-hosts—the United States, Canada and Mexico—were eliminated before reaching the quarter-finals.

For the first time in FIFA history, three nations jointly hosted the men’s World Cup, with matches staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico. The expanded 48-team tournament brought football’s biggest event to dozens of cities across North America, generating record-breaking attendances and widespread excitement. However, despite enjoying home support and familiar surroundings, none of the host nations managed to remain in the race for the title.

The United States bowed out after suffering a heavy defeat to Belgium in the Round of 16. The Americans entered the knockout stage with high expectations after progressing from the group phase, but Belgium’s experience and attacking quality proved too much. Although the hosts showed determination throughout the tournament, they were unable to overcome one of Europe’s strongest sides.

Canada’s memorable campaign also ended in the Round of 16. After making history by advancing beyond the group stage, the Canadians faced Morocco in a difficult knockout encounter. Morocco delivered a disciplined and clinical performance to secure victory, bringing Canada’s impressive run to a close. While elimination was disappointing, the tournament represented another significant step forward for Canadian football, which has continued to grow in recent years.

Mexico, meanwhile, carried the hopes of millions of passionate supporters into the knockout rounds. El Tri defeated Ecuador to book a place in the Round of 16, raising hopes of a deep run on home soil. Those hopes were dashed when England edged Mexico in a closely contested encounter. Despite a spirited display, Mexico could not find a way back after England’s decisive attacking moments.

The exits of the three co-hosts underline the growing competitiveness of international football. Home advantage has traditionally been considered an important factor at World Cups, with host nations often benefiting from passionate fan support, familiar conditions and reduced travel demands. However, the quality of the opposition in the knockout rounds left little margin for error.

Despite their eliminations, the tournament has been viewed as a success for football across North America. Stadiums have been filled with supporters from around the world, while the expanded format has introduced the World Cup to new communities and markets. The event has also strengthened interest in the sport among younger fans in the three host countries.

For the United States, the tournament offered valuable experience for a squad featuring a blend of established internationals and emerging talents. The focus will now shift to building on the lessons learned as the country prepares for future international competitions.

Canada can also take positives from its campaign. Reaching the knockout stage demonstrated the progress made by the national team over the past decade, reflecting increased investment in youth development and professional football structures.

Mexico’s elimination will undoubtedly disappoint its supporters, but the team’s performances showed resilience and determination. Football remains deeply rooted in Mexican culture, and expectations will remain high as the national team begins preparations for the next cycle.

With the host nations out of the competition, attention has now turned to the remaining contenders, including France, England, Spain, Norway, Belgium and other teams still battling for football’s greatest prize. The quarter-finals promise more drama as the race to lift the FIFA World Cup trophy intensifies.

Although none of the three co-hosts achieved the fairytale ending their fans had hoped for, the 2026 FIFA World Cup will still be remembered as a landmark tournament. It expanded the competition to 48 teams, showcased football’s global appeal and brought millions of supporters together across North America.

For the United States, Canada and Mexico, the journey has ended earlier than expected. Yet the legacy of hosting one of the biggest sporting events in history is likely to leave a lasting impact on football development, infrastructure and fan engagement throughout the region. While the dream of lifting the trophy on home soil has faded, the foundations laid during this historic World Cup could benefit the three nations for many years to come.
