The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has announced Éric Sékou Chelle as the new head coach of the Super Eagles.

This appointment has generated significant interest among Nigerian football fans, who are eager to learn more about the man tasked with leading their beloved national team.

Born on November 11, 1977, in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, Chelle holds Malian and French nationalities.

His multicultural background and experience playing and coaching in different countries are expected to bring a unique perspective to the Super Eagles.

Chelle’s playing career spanned over 16 years, during which he played as a centre-back for several French clubs, including Martigues, Valenciennes, and Lens.

He also represented Mali at the international level, earning five senior caps between 2004 and 2006.

Chelle’s experience as a player in the French league and his international appearances for Mali have provided him with valuable insights that he can draw upon as a coach.

After retiring from professional football in 2014, Chelle transitioned into coaching, starting as an assistant coach at GS Consolat.

He later became the head coach of the club before moving on to manage FC Martigues and US Boulogne.

Chelle’s coaching experience in the lower divisions of French football has equipped him with the skills and knowledge necessary to develop young players and build a strong team foundation.

In 2022, Chelle was appointed as the head coach of Mali’s national team, a position he held until his dismissal in June 2024.

During his tenure, Chelle led Mali to several impressive victories, including a 2-0 win over South Africa in the group stage of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Although his time with Mali was cut short, Chelle’s experience coaching a national team has prepared him for the challenges that come with leading the Super Eagles.

Chelle’s coaching style is described as an “apostle of free-flowing football” who uses wingers in a 4-4-2 formation.

This approach is expected to bring a more attacking and dynamic style of play to the Super Eagles, which could potentially unlock the full potential of the team’s talented players.

As Chelle begins his new role as the head coach of the Super Eagles, he will be expected to hit the ground running.

With several important matches on the horizon, including the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, Chelle will need to quickly assemble a strong team and develop a winning strategy.
