In a bid to confront Nigeria’s growing healthcare accountability crisis, leading experts and legal practitioners will convene virtually on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, for a pivotal roundtable focusing on the complex interplay of law, compliance, and patient care in the country’s medical and pharmaceutical sectors.

The high-level event, themed “Beyond the Prescription: Navigating Regulatory and Negligence Challenges in Nigeria’s Medical and Pharmaceutical Sectors,” is scheduled for 11:00 AM West African Time (WAT).

It is expected to draw participants from public health institutions, legal firms, pharmaceutical regulators, hospital management boards, and patient rights advocacy groups.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that this strategic dialogue comes at a time when Nigeria is grappling with numerous scandals related to medical malpractice, substandard pharmaceuticals, and the lack of robust legal redress for affected patients.

Recent cases have sparked national outrage, with both public and private healthcare facilities accused of negligence, unlicensed practice, and failure to uphold professional standards.

Organizers say the event aims to bridge the persistent gap between healthcare delivery and legal accountability, offering clarity to practitioners, patients, and policymakers alike.

According to briefing documents seen by DDM, the discussion will spotlight the role of the judiciary, and regulatory agencies such as the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), and the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN).

Legal scholars and compliance consultants will examine systemic weaknesses in patient safety protocols, the role of corruption in undermining pharmaceutical integrity, and why Nigeria’s regulatory bodies often struggle to prosecute negligence cases to a logical conclusion.

The discussion will also explore global compliance frameworks that could be adapted to the Nigerian context, especially as the country seeks to rebuild public trust in its healthcare system.

The event will include a live Q&A session, allowing health professionals and participants to seek clarification on issues such as consent, legal liability, documentation standards, and ethical practice.

The virtual format enables broader participation from across Nigeria and the diaspora, particularly among young medical and pharmacy students eager to understand the legal implications of their future careers.

Registration for the webinar is ongoing via bit.ly/OALDRW, and attendance is free.

Amid rising calls for accountability in Nigeria’s public institutions, this conversation is expected to spark new policy demands and potentially influence reforms in the country’s health regulatory framework.
