FAAN Intensifies Airport Surveillance as Ebola Outbreak Fears Heighten Across West Africa

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, has stepped up health surveillance and emergency screening measures across all international airports in the country following renewed concerns over possible Ebola virus outbreaks in parts of Central and West Africa.

The move is part of a broader preventive strategy aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s border health security system and ensuring that no imported case of the highly contagious disease enters the country through air travel routes. Authorities say the decision reflects a precautionary response to evolving regional health alerts and global monitoring of infectious disease patterns.

According to FAAN, enhanced screening procedures have been activated immediately at all international terminals, with additional focus placed on passengers arriving from countries currently classified as high risk by international health monitoring agencies. These measures include stricter health checks, improved monitoring systems, and closer coordination between airport health units and national disease control structures.

The development comes amid growing concern across the continent following reports of Ebola cases in some Central African regions, prompting renewed vigilance among aviation and public health authorities. While no case has been recorded in Nigeria, officials say proactive containment measures are necessary given the country’s history with the virus and its busy international travel routes.

FAAN confirmed that it is working in close collaboration with key health agencies, including the Port Health Services and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, NCDC, to ensure a coordinated and rapid response framework at all points of entry. This partnership is expected to strengthen surveillance capacity and improve the speed of detection, reporting, and isolation of any suspected cases.

As part of the enhanced measures, passengers arriving in Nigeria are now subjected to more rigorous health screening processes. These include mandatory temperature checks, health declaration forms, and symptom assessments conducted by trained medical personnel stationed at airport entry points. Travellers showing signs of illness consistent with Ebola symptoms are to be immediately isolated for secondary evaluation in line with national and international health protocols.

Airport officials have also increased visibility of health response teams within terminals, ensuring that medical personnel are readily available to respond to any suspected case in real time. Emergency response units have been placed on standby, while isolation protocols have been reinforced to prevent potential spread within airport environments.

FAAN stated that all frontline airport staff have undergone additional sensitisation and refresher training sessions to improve awareness of Ebola symptoms and enhance response procedures. These training programmes are designed to ensure that aviation personnel can identify potential risks early and respond appropriately without disrupting airport operations.

The authority also reassured members of the travelling public that there is currently no confirmed Ebola case in Nigeria. It emphasized that the country remains fully prepared to handle any potential public health threat through its strengthened surveillance systems and inter-agency coordination mechanisms.

Nigeria’s aviation health security framework has significantly evolved since the 2014 Ebola outbreak, which was successfully contained through swift intervention, contact tracing, and coordinated emergency response efforts. Health experts note that lessons from that period have contributed to improved preparedness systems that now guide national response strategies.

FAAN further urged passengers to remain calm and cooperate fully with all health screening procedures at airports. The authority stressed that these measures are not intended to cause delays or inconvenience but are necessary steps to protect public health and prevent the spread of infectious diseases across borders.

The renewed surveillance effort also aligns with ongoing global health monitoring activities, as international health organizations continue to track Ebola developments in affected regions. Aviation authorities across several African countries have similarly tightened border screening procedures as part of coordinated preventive action.

Public health specialists have reiterated that early detection and rapid isolation remain the most effective tools in controlling the spread of Ebola. They note that airports play a critical role in preventing cross border transmission due to the high volume of international passenger movement.

FAAN reiterated its commitment to maintaining a balance between passenger safety and operational efficiency, stating that all measures will be continuously reviewed in line with updated health advisories from relevant authorities.

As global travel continues to recover and expand, Nigerian authorities say sustained vigilance at airports remains essential in safeguarding national health security and protecting citizens from potential outbreaks of infectious diseases.

The agency assured that it will continue to collaborate with domestic and international partners to ensure that Nigeria remains fully prepared to respond to any emerging health threat while maintaining smooth and secure airport operations across the country.
