FAAN rescue team safely deboard 256 Passengers after United Airlines emergency return

Lagos, January 24, 2025  – The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) reported a successful emergency response following an incident involving a United Airlines Boeing 787-800.

The aircraft departed from Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos at 23:59 on January 23, 2025, but made an emergency air return, landing safely at 03:22 on January 24.

On board were 245 adults and 11 crew members.

The Aerodrome Rescue and Fire Fighting Services (ARFFS), along with Aviation Medical and Aviation Security (AVSEC) teams, were on standby and promptly positioned at gate D31 when the aircraft arrived.

The plane parked without incident, and deboarding commenced at 03:37.

While all passengers and crew disembarked safely, the incident resulted in injuries to some individuals.

Specifically, four passengers and two crew members sustained serious injuries.

Additionally, 27 passengers and five crew members experienced minor injuries.

The rescue team reacted swiftly, having been on alert just four minutes after the pilot reported distress at 01:20.

Aviation medical ambulances transported the injured passengers to various facilities.

Those with minor injuries received immediate first aid and were discharged from the MMA Clinic and the Headquarters Clinic.

In contrast, those with serious injuries were stabilized and transferred to Duchess Hospital in Ikeja. Additionally, some passengers were provided accommodation at a nearby hotel.

Importantly, the aircraft itself did not sustain any major damage during the incident.

FAAN assures the public that it will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.

Mrs. Obiageli Orah, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, highlighted the Authority’s commitment to ensuring passenger safety and quick emergency response.
