Fatal blast: Woman dies, man injured as explosion rocks Southgate home

A 37-year-old woman has died after a house exploded in Southgate, early morning of Thursday April 3, 2025.
Media reports says the explosion occurred around 5:45 a.m. on Edison and Burns Street, near Telegraph Road.
Police confirmed a 38-year-old man and the 37-year-old woman sustained injuries during the explosion.
The explosion threw the man out of the house and left him with severe burns.
The woman was trapped under debris and sustained serious burns and leg injuries.
Rescue workers pulled her from the rubble and rushed her to Detroit Receiving Hospital.
She later died from her injuries at the hospital, police confirmed.
Authorities said a woman in her 60s, who lives next door, sustained minor injuries.
She refused medical treatment at the scene, according to officials.
The explosion destroyed one house and damaged several nearby buildings.
Debris scattered across the area as firefighters battled ongoing flames.
Detective Sergeant Nathan Moscynski urged residents to avoid the area during rescue operations.
He said the explosion affected residents across several blocks.
Multiple fire crews from Downriver communities responded to the emergency.
Eyewitness Jenni Mahoney said she felt her house shake during the explosion.
She described the noise as loud and said insulation covered the streets like snow.
Investigators are probing a suspected gas explosion as the likely cause.
Detective Moscynski said the victim’s father reported a possible gas leak before the incident.
He said the woman turned on the stove and the house exploded shortly after.
The father’s call disconnected immediately after the explosion, police said.
The Detroit Energy (DTE), tested the home’s gas pipeline and declared it safe.
The company said its equipment did not cause the explosion.
DTE offered condolences to the deceased woman’s family and the injured victims.
The company advised homeowners to report suspected gas leaks immediately.
It also reminded residents that they are responsible for appliances and interior gas pipes.
DTE urged the public to call 911 and their leak hotline if they suspect danger.
Investigations into the exact cause of the explosion are still ongoing.
