ABUJA, Nigeria — The Federal Government has announced the discovery of world-class deposits of platinum, lithium, and other rare metals in Kaduna State, a development expected to significantly boost Nigeria’s solid minerals sector and diversify the nation’s economy away from oil dependence.

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, who made the announcement on Tuesday, described the discovery as a game-changer for Nigeria’s mining industry, positioning the country as a major player in the global critical minerals market. The deposits, found in various locations across Kaduna State, are said to be of high purity and commercially viable, with the potential to attract substantial foreign investment.

Platinum, a precious metal with atomic number 78, is highly valued for its resistance to corrosion, catalytic properties, and use in jewellery, laboratory equipment, and catalytic converters for vehicles. It is one of the rarest metals on earth, with all the platinum ever mined estimated to fit into an average-sized home. Lithium, atomic number 3, is the lightest of all metals and has become indispensable in the production of rechargeable batteries for mobile phones, laptops, electric vehicles, and energy storage systems.

The discovery comes as global demand for critical minerals surges, driven by the transition to clean energy technologies and the growing electric vehicle market. Lithium, in particular, is projected to experience the most rapid growth of any critical mineral, outpacing other key metals such as copper, nickel, and rare earths. The global lithium market is expected to see demand increase by 3-10 times over the next two decades.

Kaduna State, located in north-western Nigeria, is already a major industrial centre, with existing infrastructure including the Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company, an automobile assembly plant, and a branch of the Nigerian Stock Exchange. The state is also a key transportation hub, with rail and road networks connecting it to other parts of the country.

The Federal Government has pledged to provide the necessary regulatory framework and incentives to attract investment in the mining sector, while ensuring environmental sustainability and community development. The Ministry of Solid Minerals Development has also announced plans to conduct further exploration and feasibility studies to fully assess the extent of the deposits.

The discovery has been welcomed by industry stakeholders, who see it as a major step towards unlocking Nigeria’s vast mineral wealth. The Nigeria Mining and Geosciences Society has called on the government to ensure that the benefits of the discovery are shared equitably and that local communities are involved in the development process.
