Recently, the Federal Government (FG) took decisive action to improve healthcare across the nation.
Specifically, it commissioned five key projects at the Federal Medical Centre in Abeokuta.
This initiative aligns with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which emphasizes enhancing medical facilities and patient care.
Moreover, the agenda aims to support healthcare workers throughout Nigeria. By investing in these projects, the government demonstrates its commitment to transforming the healthcare landscape. Consequently, these efforts will lead to better health outcomes for citizens, ensuring a healthier future for all.
Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun participated in the ceremony, emphasizing the importance of continued collaboration between state and federal authorities. He highlighted these projects as crucial investments that will not only benefit Abeokuta but also surrounding communities in the region.
Dr. Salako from the Federal Ministry of Health elaborated on how these new facilities will address critical challenges, such as bed shortages and staff welfare. Furthermore, over the past two years, the FG has expanded healthcare access by establishing 12 new tertiary hospitals and hiring over 15,000 medical professionals nationwide.
“Our mission is to curb medical tourism, retain skilled professionals, and ensure Nigerians receive top-tier care locally,” Dr. Salako said. He also commended FMC Abeokuta’s management for initiatives like staff transportation and reiterated plans to upgrade primary healthcare centers in every ward by 2027.
Professor Musa-Olomu, the outgoing Chief Medical Director, reflected on the hospital’s dramatic transformation since he took charge in 2017. What was once a football field now hosts a world-class conference center, a modern ICU, and advanced telemedicine facilities. He expressed pride in leaving behind a legacy that will serve generations.
The newly completed buildings honor distinguished contributors to healthcare, including Governor Abiodun, former Governor Osoba, and Dr. Abolurin. Each facility recognizes their efforts in advancing medical services in Ogun State and beyond.
Dr. Dayo Israel, Chairman of the hospital’s management board, praised the collaborative efforts behind the projects and revealed plans for further expansions. An Accident and Emergency Unit, a General Outpatient Department, and a MegaLab are in the works, positioning FMC Abeokuta as a leading healthcare provider for major industries in the region.
“These developments solidify our path toward becoming a center of excellence,” Dr. Israel stated. The event highlighted the strengthened partnership between FG and state leaders in reshaping Nigeria’s healthcare landscape.
As the nation marks two years under President Tinubu’s administration, FMC Abeokuta stands as proof of progress in delivering quality, accessible healthcare. This milestone reinforces the government’s commitment to bridging gaps in medical services and ensuring better health outcomes for all Nigerians. The newly inaugurated facilities promise to enhance treatment options, attract skilled professionals, and ultimately save lives across the country.
