KADUNA, Nigeria — The Federal Government has officially flagged off the reconstruction of the ₦178 billion Kaduna (Mando)–Birnin Gwari Road, describing the project as a strategic investment aimed at improving security, boosting economic activities and enhancing connectivity between communities in Kaduna State and neighbouring regions.
The road project, which has long been considered one of the most critical transport corridors in northern Nigeria, is expected to improve the movement of people, goods and services while addressing years of deterioration that have affected motorists, businesses and residents. Government officials said the reconstruction forms part of broader efforts to modernise the nation’s road infrastructure and stimulate economic growth.
Speaking during the flag-off ceremony, government representatives said the project reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to improving transportation networks across the country. They noted that the Kaduna (Mando)–Birnin Gwari Road serves as an important link connecting agricultural communities, commercial centres and neighbouring states, making its rehabilitation essential for regional development.
Officials explained that the reconstructed highway will improve access to markets, reduce travel time, lower transportation costs and create a safer environment for commuters. They also expressed optimism that the upgraded road would encourage investment, facilitate trade and support economic activities in communities located along the corridor.
The government further noted that insecurity has posed significant challenges along the route in recent years, affecting the movement of residents and commercial vehicles. Construction of the highway is also expected to generate employment opportunities for engineers, contractors, artisans and other skilled and unskilled workers throughout the duration of the project. Community leaders and residents welcomed the commencement of the reconstruction, describing the project as long overdue. They expressed hope that the improved road would ease transportation challenges, reduce vehicle maintenance costs and encourage greater commercial activities within Birnin Gwari and surrounding communities.
Transport and infrastructure experts also commended the project, noting that efficient road networks remain essential for national development.
