The Federal Government has secured N250 billion for the development of light rail projects in Kaduna and Kano States.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed this in Abuja on Monday during a world press conference marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary.

He noted that President Bola Tinubu is prioritizing balanced development across all regions.

According to Idris, the Kano project is valued at N150 billion while the Kaduna project will cost N100 billion.

He stressed that Tinubu’s administration remains committed to ensuring that no part of the country is sidelined in terms of infrastructure.

“Contrary to the perception being pushed in some quarters, this administration has demonstrated uncommon commitment to balanced and inclusive development since assuming office.

The distribution of capital projects under President Tinubu is equitable. No zone is taking a back seat,” Idris said.

The minister explained that the government is actively backing sub-national infrastructure development while also strengthening local government areas through financial autonomy.

He added that improved revenue inflow from the removal of oil subsidy has boosted the capacity of states to deliver projects without accumulating heavy debt.

“All state governments now receive multiples of what they previously got from the federation account.

Thanks to the increased headroom from the oil subsidy removal, sub-national governments are now able to do a lot more and with less debt,” Idris said.

The announcement comes at a time when Nigerians are pressing for improved transportation systems to reduce traffic congestion, boost commerce, and attract investment.

The Kaduna and Kano light rail systems are expected to transform urban mobility, create jobs, and strengthen regional trade links.

Industry analysts have welcomed the move, stressing that improved rail infrastructure could enhance productivity and drive long-term economic growth in Northern Nigeria.

However, they also caution that transparency, accountability, and timely project delivery will be key to success.

With the funding secured, the Federal Government is now expected to move quickly to ensure construction kicks off in both states as part of Tinubu’s broader infrastructure development agenda.
