The Federal Government has introduced a nationwide online learning programme to tackle Nigeria’s severe shortage of over 1.2 million teachers across basic and secondary education.
The initiative, known as the Inspire Live(s)! Online Real-Time Classes, is designed to expand access to quality learning for primary and secondary school pupils and ensure uninterrupted education regardless of location.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education, Folasade Boriowo, said the programme uses technology to stream live, interactive lessons directly to learners. She noted that the move would “democratise access to quality education and ensure no child is left behind.”
According to her, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has confirmed that full-scale implementation is underway, with the programme expected to cover all classes from Primary 1 to Senior Secondary 3 (SS3).
While classes for Junior and Senior Secondary Schools have commenced, the rollout for primary schools is still being finalised.
Daily Online Classes Already Running
The Ministry said the Inspire platform currently streams real-time lessons for JSS 1, JSS 2, and SS 2, broadcasting Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Subjects available at the JSS level include Basic Science, Mathematics, English Language, ICT, Agricultural Science, Basic Technology, Civic Education, French, Physical Education, Religious Studies, History, and Business Studies.
For Senior Secondary students, the platform offers Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English Language, Mathematics, Economics, Geography, Agricultural Science, Technical Drawing, Catering Craft, Civic Education, and Automobile Mechanics.
Boriowo emphasised that classes are taught by certified master teachers using Cisco Webex to ensure smooth and interactive delivery.
States Directed to Begin Full Coordination
To guarantee effective nationwide adoption, the Ministry has directed all state Commissioners of Education to:
Nominate State Focal Officers to coordinate Inspire Live(s)! activities
Disseminate programme details to public and private school principals
Ensure selected schools are equipped with basic ICT infrastructure and reliable internet
Oversee proper registration, which must be carried out solely by school principals via the Inspire support channels
The Federal Government said the programme is open to all public and private schools, making it one of the largest digital education interventions ever launched in Nigeria.
