The governor of Abia state, Dr Alex Otti has approved a new minimum wage of N70,000 for workers in the state, set to take effect from October 2024.
The approval was announced by the state’s Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, during a press briefing after the State Executive Council meeting on Monday, which was chaired by the governor.
Mr Kanu stressed that the decision reflects the state government’s commitment to improving the welfare of its workers.
Meanwhile, the payment of the new minimum wage is expected to commence in the coming days, marking a new chapter for civil servants in the state.
“The state government is committed to the minimum wage, and within the next few days, payment of the new minimum wage will commence
“If the governor wants to deviate from the national standard and pay higher, so be it”, Kanu said.
Also, the development was confirmed by Commissioner for Labour and Productivity Sunny Onwuma.
