Free Nnamdi Kanu, sit-at-home crippling South East -FENRAD

The Foundation for Environmental Rights, Advocacy, and Development (FENRAD) has raised concerns about the devastating economic impact of the sit-at-home order in Nigeria’s Southeast region.

The directive, initiated by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) following the detention of their leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has crippled the region’s economy.

Comrade Nelson Nnanna Nwafor, FENRAD’s Executive Director, in a statement made available to Diaspora Digital Media on Wednesday decried that “the Southeast, once a vibrant economic hub, is now on its knees. The weekly economic shutdown has resulted in massive losses, joblessness, and poverty.”

FENRAD attributes the crisis to Kanu’s detention and urges the Federal Government to respect court orders and release him unconditionally.

This, they believe, will address IPOB’s concerns and pave the way for dialogue.

“The Southeast region cannot continue to suffer from economic paralysis while the issues that have led to the crisis remain unresolved,” Nwafor emphasized. “It is time for peace, progress, and prosperity to return to the region.”

FENRAD also called on the Federal Government to engage in constructive dialogue with IPOB, traditional rulers, community leaders, and civil society organizations.

It also demanded economic relief measures for affected businesses and individuals.

“The immediate release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is crucial for peace and economic recovery in the Southeast. The economic future of the region is at stake, and urgent steps must be taken to end the suffering of millions,” Nwafor further added.

Key Events in Nnamdi Kanu’s Detention:*

*Initial Arrest: October 2015, arrested by Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS).
