Governor Sanwo-Olu Inaugurates Legacy Infrastructure Projects in Lagos
The commencement of the New Year in Lagos State witnessed the inauguration of four significant infrastructure projects by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. These projects were initiated and facilitated by the Chief of Staff to the President, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila.
Governor Sanwo-Olu officially commissioned the Femi Gbajabiamila General Hospital, a three-storey, 80-bed facility located at Iyun in Aralile Community, Surulere. The hospital, which was remodelled from a decrepit Primary Health Centre, aims to relieve the strain on healthcare facilities in Surulere and surrounding areas.
Additionally, the Governor inaugurated the reconstructed 1.6km Babs Animashaun Road in Surulere, transformed from a single-lane to a dualised four-lane carriageway with two bridge components. This road project, completed within 12 months, is expected to enhance traffic connectivity and reduce travel time.
Governor Sanwo-Olu described these projects as “legacy infrastructure” that will have a lasting impact, emphasizing their alignment with the State’s development agenda. The Chief of Staff to the President, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, initiated these projects before his current role, showcasing his commitment to meeting the needs of his constituents.
The projects also include an International Conference Centre donated to the Ojo campus of the Lagos State University (LASU) and the construction of the Sam Sonibare Community Development Centre in Surulere, featuring a mini stadium, indoor sport auditorium, fitness centre, basketball and lawn tennis court, among other outdoor facilities.
Speaking at the inauguration, Governor Sanwo-Olu praised the collaborative efforts between the State Government and the federal legislature, acknowledging the positive transformation witnessed in infrastructure renewal. He highlighted the purposeful governance demonstrated by the development initiatives.
Furthermore, Governor Sanwo-Olu revealed plans for the establishment of a Medical University in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health. The proposed medical institution, currently undergoing approval processes with the National Universities Commission (NUC), aims to address medical research and training needs while curbing brain drain in the health sector.
Gbajabiamila commended the Lagos State Government for its commitment to collaboration and expressed satisfaction that the projects met the expectations of his constituents. He explained that the Femi Gbajabiamila General Hospital was initiated to enhance Lagos’ capacity to address public health emergencies.
The President’s Chief of Staff emphasized the importance of providing quality healthcare and infrastructure to improve people’s lives. He envisioned the newly constructed hospital as a place of hope, healing, and testimony.
In addition to these projects, Governor Sanwo-Olu announced the State’s plan to set up a Medical University, reinforcing the commitment to advancing medical services. The collaborative efforts between the State Government and federal legislature are expected to yield more transformative projects throughout the year.
