Greece 2-2 Netherlands: Reijnders Rescues Dutch with Late Equaliser in Nations League Thriller

Greece surrendered a two-goal half-time lead as the Netherlands produced a dramatic second-half comeback to secure a 2-2 draw in a thrilling UEFA Nations League encounter at Toumba Stadium on Thursday, October 1, 2026.

The hosts appeared on course for a memorable victory after Fotis Ioannidis and Giorgos Masouras put Greece 2-0 ahead before the break. However, the Netherlands responded strongly after half-time, with captain Virgil van Dijk pulling one goal back before Tijjani Reijnders struck in the 89th minute to rescue a point for Xavi Hernández’s side.

The result extended an eventful opening phase of the Nations League campaign for both teams and produced a match of two contrasting halves. Greece dominated the first half with direct attacking football and aggressive defensive organisation, while the Netherlands transformed after the interval and eventually forced the hosts deep into their own penalty area.

Greece thought they had taken an early lead through Christos Tzolis, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Vangelis Pavlidis was judged to have interfered with play while in an offside position, allowing the officials to disallow Tzolis’ finish. The decision proved particularly significant because Tzolis was forced off with an apparent hamstring injury only minutes later, with Giorgos Masouras introduced in his place.

The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 23rd minute. Masouras immediately justified his introduction by providing the assist for Ioannidis, who raced onto his teammate’s flick-on before advancing towards goal and curling a composed finish into the far corner. The striker’s movement and finish gave Bart Verbruggen little opportunity to intervene as Greece moved 1-0 ahead.

Masouras then turned from provider to goalscorer deep into first-half stoppage time. In the 45th minute, Ioannidis returned the favour, supplying a low ball across the penalty area that Masouras met and turned into the net from close range. The goal gave Greece a 2-0 advantage at the interval and capped a remarkable first half for Masouras, who had entered the game as an early substitute and finished the opening period with a goal and an assist.

The Netherlands had been unable to impose their possession game before the break, prompting Xavi to make three changes at half-time. Ryan Gravenberch, Tijjani Reijnders and Noa Lang were introduced as the Dutch manager attempted to inject greater pace and creativity into his midfield and attack.

The changes transformed the contest. The Netherlands began circulating the ball more quickly, pushing Greece deeper and creating sustained pressure around Konstantinos Tzolakis’ goal. Their persistence finally paid off in the 59th minute when Van Dijk rose to meet a corner and powered a header beyond the Greek goalkeeper to reduce the deficit to 2-1.

The Dutch then appeared to have completed the comeback when Denzel Dumfries found the net, but the goal was disallowed for offside following a VAR review. Dumfries later had another effort ruled out for the same reason, adding further drama to a match that had already produced several controversial moments.

Greece increasingly found itself defending its narrow advantage, with Tzolakis making important interventions while his defenders threw themselves in front of Dutch attempts. The visitors kept coming, however, and their pressure finally produced an equaliser in the 89th minute.

Reijnders became the Dutch hero when he found the net late in the contest to make it 2-2. The midfielder’s finish completed a remarkable turnaround after Greece had appeared to have the game under control. The Netherlands continued pushing during five minutes of stoppage time, but Greece held on to claim a point from a match that had seemed destined to end in defeat for the visitors.

The match also contained a worrying moment for Greece when Tzolis was forced off injured after just 17 minutes. The winger was visibly distressed as he received treatment before being replaced by Masouras, whose immediate contribution dramatically changed the course of the match.

For Greece, the draw will feel like a missed opportunity after such an impressive first-half display. They defended aggressively, attacked directly and repeatedly exposed weaknesses in the Dutch defensive structure before the interval. The Netherlands, meanwhile, can take encouragement from the character shown after falling two goals behind, particularly the impact of their half-time substitutions.

The 2-2 result leaves both sides unbeaten after three Nations League Group A2 matches, with Greece continuing to lead the section and the Netherlands remaining close behind. The Dutch will know they were fortunate to escape Thessaloniki with a point, but their second-half response ensured Greece’s commanding advantage was not enough to secure another victory.

With four goals, two disallowed efforts, an early injury, a dramatic late equaliser and a spectacular shift in momentum after half-time, Greece and the Netherlands delivered one of the most entertaining matches of the Nations League’s latest round.
