Gumel sees new taekwando protege as Nigeria’s hope at Olympics

Elizabeth Anyanacho, 24, has Habu Gumel, Engineer and President, Nigerian Olympic Committee, NOC blushing with elation after she qualified for the Olympics.

To boot, president, Taekwondo Federation of Nigeria, TFN, Abdullahi Saidu, got a congratulatory note from the NOC for the feat.

Not since Chika Chukwumerije made it as far as quarter final of the men’s 80kg Taekwondo in the Olympics has the country’s name been heard in the martial sport.

But young Anyanacho appears to be full of promise.

Competing in the 67 kg weight class, she dispatched Kenyan Jully Musanga in two rounds at an African/Olympic qualifier in Dakar, Senegal this year.

For Anyanacho, Oly, this would make it a back-to-back appearance at the global showpiece.

She was at the Tokyo 2020 Games, where appeared as a bronze medalist from the Morocco African Games in 2019.

”Anyanacho will be attending the Paris Games later this year as a more mature Lady. She is good to go, ” whipped, Saidu, President of TFN.

”We are more confident in her abilities now than ever before. Lizzy is in good spirits, taking easy with a buildup training here in Abuja and eagerly waiting to take part in the African Games to be held in Accra, Ghana.”

A statement issued on behalf of Engr. Gumel, President NOC, the Public Relations Officer of the Committee said:

”We in the Olympic Movement are proud to be associated with such a rising star, ago is committed to raising the flag of the Nation in Paris,’ noted the lone Nigerian IOC member.
