Gunshots rang out on Wednesday as the Ogun State Deputy Governor, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, narrowly escaped an attack by protesting students in Abeokuta, the state capital.

The incident occurred as the deputy governor’s convoy was heading towards the 35 Artillery Brigade in Alabama, Abeokuta, where she was scheduled to represent Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun at the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day event.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered the information from eyewitness accounts and video footage circulating on social media.

As the convoy made its way through the city, it was confronted by a group of students who were protesting.

A viral video that has circulated on social media shows the convoy attempting to take an alternate route, with gunshots heard in the background.

The shots, which echoed through the area, added to the tense atmosphere as the protesters, reportedly from Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), blocked the convoy’s path.

The students, wielding sticks and other makeshift weapons, aggressively approached the vehicles, escalating the situation.

According to a statement released by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Information and Strategy, Mr. Kayode Akinmade, the protesters became more confrontational when they recognized the deputy governor in the convoy.

In response, the convoy was forced to change direction to avoid further confrontation, eventually taking a detour towards the deputy governor’s lodge to allow the protesters to pass peacefully.

However, despite the diversion, the situation remained volatile, with gunshots continuing to echo in the vicinity.

The statement further highlighted that the violence intensified as the protesters became more determined to obstruct the convoy.

Several of the security vehicles accompanying the deputy governor were damaged during the chaos. Some security operatives were also injured while trying to maintain order.

The gunshots that rang out throughout the incident contributed to the fear and confusion that marked the altercation.

While it was confirmed that no lives were lost during the event, the authorities emphasized the disruption caused to traffic and the safety concerns for everyone involved.

The deputy governor’s security detail worked to ensure her protection despite the violence, but the gunshots made it evident that the situation could have escalated further.

The press release also underscored the aggressive nature of the protesters, whose actions led to significant damage to public property and heightened the risk of injury or worse.

The incident has raised concerns about student protests in the state and the potential for further violence in the future, especially with the recurrence of gunshots during demonstrations.
