The hotel employee who stole cash from members of Nigeria’s Super Falcons during their training camp in Morocco has been sentenced to six months in prison, bringing a swift conclusion to an incident that briefly overshadowed the team’s preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

The Nigeria Football Federation confirmed that the suspect was arrested by Moroccan authorities after investigations into the theft at the team’s hotel in Casablanca. According to the federation, the suspect admitted to the crime, returned the stolen money in full, and was subsequently convicted and handed a six-month jail term.

The theft occurred on the final day of the Super Falcons’ stay in Casablanca before the squad travelled to Rabat for the start of their WAFCON campaign. The incident caused concern within the team after several players discovered that money had disappeared from their hotel rooms.

Midfielder Esther Okoronkwo later disclosed that she, goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, defender Michelle Alozie and captain Rasheedat Ajibade were among those affected. She revealed that more than $1,000 was stolen and expressed disappointment with the hotel’s initial handling of the matter after the players reported the incident.

The revelation quickly gained attention across social media, with many football fans calling for a thorough investigation and improved security for the Nigerian delegation. While numerous supporters sympathized with the players, Okoronkwo also became the target of racist abuse from some social media users, drawing widespread condemnation from football stakeholders and supporters.

In its official response, the Nigeria Football Federation strongly condemned the racist attacks directed at the midfielder, insisting that discrimination has no place in football or society.

The federation emphasized that the successful arrest and prosecution of the suspect demonstrated that justice had been served. It also reiterated its commitment to protecting the welfare, dignity and safety of all national team players whenever they represent Nigeria abroad.

Despite the unfortunate incident, the Super Falcons refused to allow the distraction to derail their focus on the continental tournament. Okoronkwo responded defiantly to the online abuse by urging critics to judge the team by its performances on the pitch rather than off-field controversies.

The midfielder has become one of Nigeria’s key attacking players in recent years. Her impressive displays during the previous WAFCON campaign, where she contributed goals and assists to Nigeria’s record-extending 10th continental title, have established her as one of the team’s most influential performers.

The swift conclusion of the criminal case has also been welcomed by Nigerian football officials, who viewed the recovery of the stolen money and the prison sentence as evidence that Moroccan authorities acted promptly once the investigation was completed.

Security remains a critical aspect of international tournaments, with national teams expecting safe accommodation and adequate protection throughout their stay. Incidents involving theft can negatively affect players’ concentration, particularly during major competitions where mental focus is essential.

Although the Super Falcons encountered this setback before the tournament, the team remained determined to pursue another continental title. Their attention quickly shifted back to football as preparations continued for the demanding group-stage fixtures against Malawi, Zambia and Egypt.

For the Nigeria Football Federation, the resolution of the case sends a reassuring message that crimes against its players will not go unpunished. The federation has continued to advocate for the welfare of its athletes while maintaining close cooperation with tournament organizers and local authorities whenever issues arise.

While the theft briefly cast a shadow over Nigeria’s preparations, the prison sentence closes an unfortunate chapter and allows the focus to return to the team’s ambitions on the field. The Super Falcons remain determined to compete for another African title, with their players hoping that their performances will dominate the headlines for the right reasons in the remainder of the championship.
