Houthis claim responsibility for attacks on Israel

The Houthis on Thursday, claimed responsibility for launching a hypersonic missile at Israel’s Ben Gurion airport.

This comes days after the Israeli army broke a ceasefire in Gaza, the Yemeni group said.

Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree was quoted to have said on Thursday,

“The Yemeni armed forces carried out a qualitative military operation targeting Ben Gurion airport,

in the occupied Jaffa region with a Palestine-2 hypersonic ballistic missile,” .

He said the operation “successfully achieved its objective”, without elaborating.

It was the second such attack since the United States began a new campaign of air raids against the rebels earlier this week.

The Israeli military said it intercepted the missile before it entered the country’s territory early on Thursday. Sirens sounded in several areas in Israel after the projectile was fired, the military said in a post on Telegram.

The Israeli police said sirens were heard in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Israel’s ambulance service said no serious injuries were reported.

Since Saturday, the US has launched a series of strikes against Yemen, prompting the Houthis to vow to intensify their attacks, including on Israel, in retaliation.

At least 31 people have been killed in the US strikes.

On Tuesday, the Houthis announced they had launched a ballistic missile at Israel.

They said they planned to broaden their target range in the coming days, citing Israel’s violation of the ceasefire in Gaza.

According to Gaza’s Ministry of Health, Since Tuesday, at least 710 Palestinian deaths and over 900 people were injured in Israel’s renewed attacks.

The Houthis have carried out more than 100 attacks on shipping since Israel’s war on Gaza began in late 2023.

They have stated that their actions are in solidarity with the Palestinians of Gaza.

On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump reiterated his demand for Iran to end its support for the Houthis.

Trump also promised that the Yemeni group would be defeated by the US.

While the Houthis are allied with Iran, it remains unclear how much they depend on Iranian support or whether Tehran can influence them to cease their attacks.

On Thursday, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei condemned the US strikes in Yemen.

He described it as a “crime that must be stopped” and also denounced the attacks on Yemeni civilians.
