HURMA condemns alleged imposition of market leader in Igbogbo/Baiyeku, Lagos
The Human Rights Monitoring Agenda (HURMA) has condemned the alleged imposition of one market leader in the Igbogbo/ Baiyeku Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos State.
In a letter to the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, HURMA appealed to concerned authorities to look into the current crisis on market leadership which has caused instability in the above-mentioned LCDA of the state.
The Executive Director of HURMA, Comrade Buna Olaitan Isiak, disclosed during a press briefing on Sunday that the emergence of one unauthorized individual as Iya Oloja-General of Igbogbo/Baiyeku LCDA will bring confusion in the area.
Isiaka stated “The office of the Lagos State Governor has been contacted for urgent intervention in a letter titled: “Urgent Call for Governor Sanwo-Olu to Address Threats to the Life and Office of Acting Iya Oloja-General of Igbogbo/Baiyeku LCDA: Restore Peace and Justice.”
As gathered by the Diaspora Digital Media (DDM), the urgent attention of HURMA was drawn on the above issue and a thorough investigation was carried out, which exposed the truth that Chief Mrs Mojisola Oyesanya has been duly nominated, appointed, and endorsed as the Acting Iya Oloja-General of Igbogbo/Baiyeku LCDA.
HURMA said “we confirmed that the appointment was legitimate, having followed due process and secured consensus from key stakeholders, including royal councils (Adeboruwa-in-Council, Olubeshe-in-Council, and Fidimolu-in-Council), LCDA arms, the police, and the DSS.
The Executive Director of HURMA acknowledged that the appointment was formally approved by the council chairman, validating Oyesanya as the rightful Iya Oloja General.
Isiaka pointed out that despite the formal approval of Oyesanya, certain individuals have attempted to bring confusion into the area by bringing up an unauthorized candidate to replace Oyesanya.
He noted that the move was connected to His Royal Majesty, the Adeboruwa of Igbogbo Kingdom’s approval, which refuted as false and baseless.
The Executive Director pointed out the fact that two letters on different occasions have been written to the office of the state governor and the Commissioner of Police.
Reportedly, Oyesanya’s life has been threatened by unknown five men who visited her shop while she was away, dropping a message for her to withdraw from her position as Iya Oloja General or face the fallout.
The HURMA’s ED however stated that “in light of these developments, we request that the validity of Chief Mrs Mojisola Oyesanya as the Acting Iya Oloja-General must be upheld without any adjustments.
“The authorities must prevent any attempt to bring anyone else up or recognize another individual, as it is a threat to an orderly community.
“The Nigeria Police Force and relevant security agencies must ensure that a thorough investigation is carried out and make sure Oyesanya’s life and property is safe.”
“The authority of the Igbogbo/Baiyeku LCDA, under the leadership of the council chairman, must be respected and protected from any unlawful actions that could compromise its legitimacy.”
“Any individuals parading themselves as Iya Oloja-General, apart from Oyesanya, should be brought under the law and be duly punished,” the group appealed.
“We appeal to the executive governor of Lagos State and the royal fathers to ensure that justice prevails, holding back any action that could cause havoc in the area.
HURMA also issued a call to action, urging the relevant authorities to take decisive measures to restore order, uphold justice, and safeguard the lives and well-being of all individuals involved.
“Let’s make it clear that we won’t stand for unlawful behaviour and intimidation in our community or anywhere else,” HURMA stated.
