Fellow Imo State citizens, as we approach 2027, we are reminded of the sacred principles of fairness, justice, and unity that bind us together as one people.

The unwritten Charter of Equity, which has long guided the leadership structure in our state, was created with the sole purpose of ensuring that all zones – Owerri, Orlu, and Okigwe – are given equal opportunities to serve in the highest office of the state.

In recent years, however, it has become evident that one zone, Orlu, has enjoyed a prolonged period of dominance in the governorship seat, holding it for nearly 24 years.

While this has undoubtedly brought some level of development to our state, it is important to acknowledge that the rotational system was designed to ensure a balanced, fair, and equitable distribution of power among the three zones.

It is in this spirit that we must reflect on the upcoming 2027 election.

It is not just a matter of legalities or agreements, but a matter of moral integrity and commitment to the ideals of fairness.

The clamour from across the state, particularly from Owerri and Okigwe Zones, has reached a crescendo, calling for a return to the rotational principle that ensures no one zone monopolizes the governorship position for an extended period.

The people of Owerri and Okigwe, who have long been at the receiving end, are now asking for their rightful turn to lead, as was agreed.

We understand that the desire to contest and lead is a natural aspiration for every citizen of the state.

However, it is critical that we view this not as a personal ambition but as part of a broader vision for Imo State – a vision that holds equity and justice at its core.

If Orlu Zone were to contest the 2027 election, it would not only ignore the voice of the people of Imo State but would also undermine the very foundation that holds the state together.

Such an action could further deepen divides and sow discord among the three zones, ultimately undermining the unity that is essential for the continued progress of our state.

The past governors from Orlu Zone and the current governor, Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodinma, have made their contributions to the development of our state, however, it is now time to give the people of Owerri and Okigwe the opportunity to serve and contribute to the continued growth of the state.

We believe that true leadership is about sacrifice, understanding, and putting the collective good of the people above individual interests.

Let us remember that the essence of leadership lies not in holding on to power, but in knowing when to step aside for the sake of fairness, unity, and progress.

By respecting the principles of rotation and stepping aside for the 2027 election, Orlu Zone would be demonstrating the highest form of leadership – one that prioritizes the welfare of Imo State above all else.

Some commentators are of the opinion, and rightly so, that power will not be handed to any zone; rather, it must be seized or claimed through action and influence, advising that Owerri and Okigwe Zones have to assert their authority and if need be challenge established systems.

Ultimately, the idea that power must be actively taken emphasizes the effort, strategy, and sometimes conflict required to gain and maintain it.

However, it is not a crime and there is nothing wrong if power is granted or shared, such as it is done in democratic systems, where power is rotated to accommodate the strong and the weak, the majority and the minority, the have and the have-nots.

We therefore call upon Orlu Zone, its leaders, and the people to rise above personal desires and show their commitment to the unity and prosperity of Imo State.

Let 2027 Imo governorship aspiration be a reflection of the collective strength of all zones, working together to build a brighter future for the generations to come.

We believe that together, we can create a truly inclusive Imo State – one that stands as a model of equity, fairness, and unity for the entire nation.

Shalom
