The Imo State Government led by Senator Hope Uzodimma is fine tuning plans to introduce and distribute custom helmets for Okada Operators and the general public soon.
This was disclosed by the state’s Commissioner for Homeland Security and Vigilante Affairs, Dr. Ugorji Ugorji, following a working meeting he held with leaders of the Imo Motorcyclists Association in Owerri.
Speaking to News Band after the meeting, Dr. Ugorji said: “Pursuant to the understanding I had with Okada Riders, the Ministry of Homeland Security and Vigilante Affairs is moving swiftly to design a helmet and apron for Okada Operators in the state.”
According to him, the effort is for the safety of the operators and their passengers, as well as a security measure to identify legitimate and registered operators in the state.
Consequently, the Ministry has drafted a policy and procedure governing the issuance of the safety and security helmets.
Dr. Ugorji said that upon approval by the Governor and the state Executive Council, the helmets will be made available following a formal launching and presentation by Governor Uzodimma.
“Our Governor prioritizes safety and security of Imo citizens above all else,” the Homeland Security chief said.
“This is one more step in Governor Uzodimma’s whole-of-government approach to security and safety in Imo State,” he added.
It will be recalled that Commissioner Ugorji brokered a truce between the government and Okada Riders who had clashed with security officials in Owerri earlier in the month of May.
Since the working meeting between the Ministry and the Okada union on May 15, 2023, government has enabled the release of several motorcycles seized by the police during the said clash.
“These bikes are the sources of income for these operators.
“As a goodwill and good faith gesture, it is important that these men return to being bread winners, with an understanding to abide by the rules and keep the peace,” Dr. Ugorji said.
