The dwindling fortune of technical and tertiary education in Imo state has been traced to poor or dilapidating educational facilities.

Imo state was known as an educationally driven state that led other states academically.

An investigation into the Technical and tertiary sector shows that the sector has dwindled academically leading to turnout non-performing graduates in the state.

However the Commissioner of Tertiary and Technical Education, Prof. Victor Nwachukwu has raised the hope of Imo people in his quest to revamp the sector.

Prof Nwachukwu, a lecturer in the famous university of Nigeria Nsukka, told newsmen in his office on Wednesday 11th December,2024 that Gov. Hope Uzodinma has concluded plans to revamp the sector in the state.

He said that education is undergoing a phase from the conventional to the ICT based education and a system of developing individuals to be self reliant.

” We are trying to see how to improve the tertiary and technical education sector to at least a world class standard so that our youths will be relevant in the society,” he noted.

Nwachukwu said that he had toured all the schools to have a first hand knowledge of the state of infrastructures in the schools and have commenced work on some of them.

The Commissioner said that Governor Hope Uzodinma has vowed to change the state of the tertiary and technical education sector and had awarded contracts for their rehabilitation.

” We have also commenced a federal government training program for all the principals and teachers of the institutions to increase their capacities”, he stated.

Prof Nwachukwu pointed out that technical education can bridge the gap created by conventional education by impacting positively on the youths.

He added that technical education is better than secondary education because talents can be discovered early, resulting to employments or empowerment creation for the youths.

Commissioner said, the governor is building the facilities and will equip them with the necessary facilities if completed. He promised to create awareness of the importance of technical education in the 21st century to the grassroots.

“If the schools are equipped, the students will acquire relevant skills that will help them to earn a living and impact positively in the society.

“Learning handwork helps you to have something to do and train your children.

” Education is a diligent process of refining the sensibilities of man so that you will be fit in any aspect of life to actualize your potential”, he opined.

Mr Okey Mbagwu, a director in the ministry said, with technical education, students will not graduate and still look for job again, but rather become employers of labour.

He encourage the youths to embrace technical education.
