Imo state on Wednesday, came under serious siege as gunmen launched series of attacks which resulted in widespread panic among residents.

The attacks occurred in several locations, including the Ikenegbu area, Wethedral Road leading to the Government House, and Okigwe Road near Imo State University campus.

Other targeted areas included Amawusa on Douglas Road and Toronto Street extending to MCC Road Junction.

In response to the attacks, police deployed tear gas to disperse the gunmen.

Spokesman of Imo state police command, ASP Henry Okoye, stated that the criminal elements used a “guerrilla style,” launching surprise attacks and then retreating.

Meanwhile, police commissioner in the State, Aboki Danjuma has reportedly taken personal command of the response, stressing that the force is determined to arrest the culprits, either dead or alive.

“The Commissioner of Police has personally led men to the scenes,” Okoye said. “We will deal with the miscreants responsible for these attacks and the killing of security operatives and unsuspecting members of the public.”

Okoye urged Imo residents to report any suspicious activity to the police and reassured them that efforts are underway to restore normalcy. He also noted that there had been no confirmed reports of casualties from the incident.

This attack follows a similar incident on Monday, where gunmen targeted policemen on duty at Orji Road, Owerri, killing four and stealing their rifles.
