(DDM) – A relative of a victim in Imo State has revealed new details about a violent attack that left his brother dead, allegedly carried out by individuals often referred to as “unknown gunmen.”

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the attack occurred in a local community experiencing repeated security challenges, with several residents living in fear due to the activities of armed groups in the South-East region.

The victim’s relative stated that the gunmen are not truly faceless, claiming that some residents could recognize the attackers and that their identities are known within certain circles of the community.

“They are not completely unknown,” he said. “People in the community are aware of them and have seen them in previous attacks.”

The incident reportedly happened late at night, creating panic among residents who fled their homes during the attack to avoid further harm.

Security sources confirmed that authorities have maintained surveillance in vulnerable areas, but noted that the attackers strike swiftly and retreat before law enforcement can intervene.

Analysts warn that recurring violence in the South-East reflects a broader pattern of intimidation and targeted killings, contributing to insecurity and public anxiety in affected communities.

Human rights groups have repeatedly expressed concern over the use of armed groups to terrorize civilians, warning that ongoing violence disrupts education, economic activity, and community cohesion.

Local leaders have called on the government to strengthen intelligence operations and deploy more security personnel to protect residents, particularly in rural areas vulnerable to such attacks.

Community members lament that fear of violence has disrupted daily life, making it difficult for children to attend school or farmers to tend to their farms.

The victim’s relative appealed for justice, stressing that identifying and holding the perpetrators accountable is critical to preventing future killings and restoring confidence in security agencies.

Observers note that labeling attackers as “unknown gunmen” often obscures their identities, allowing violent actors to continue operating with impunity.

Security officials have promised enhanced patrols and investigations in the affected areas, though skepticism remains among residents due to the frequency and intensity of past attacks.

Analysts caution that unless decisive action is taken, such attacks may escalate further, destabilizing communities and eroding trust in state and federal protection measures.

The incident underscores the urgent need for a coordinated response to armed violence in the South-East, ensuring that citizens can live safely without fear of targeted attacks.
