INEC begins nationwide continuous voter registration exercise today

(DDM) – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the official commencement of the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the electoral umpire revealed the update through its official X handle on Monday, confirming that the online pre-registration phase would begin on August 18, 2025.

According to INEC, the exercise will enable new voters, those seeking transfers, and individuals wishing to replace lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to participate.

The commission explained that the physical registration process is scheduled to begin on August 25, 2025, across the federation.

It further clarified that in-person registration will be conducted at its 37 state offices, including the Federal Capital Territory, as well as at 774 local government area offices nationwide.

This arrangement, according to INEC, is to ensure that every eligible Nigerian has easy access to the registration process ahead of future elections.

The CVR exercise, which is one of INEC’s flagship programmes, remains a key avenue for consolidating voter participation and strengthening democratic governance.

Officials of the electoral body emphasised that the registration window is strictly open to citizens aged 18 and above who have not yet registered to vote.

INEC also reminded Nigerians that multiple registrations are strictly prohibited, warning that violators risk legal consequences under the nation’s electoral laws.

The commission equally encouraged Nigerians to take advantage of the opportunity, describing voter registration as a civic responsibility central to the democratic process.

To ease inquiries, INEC directed the public to its call centre on 0700-CALL-INEC (0700-2255-4632) and also provided a short code service via 4632.

It further urged citizens to visit the online portal www.cvr.inecnigeria.org to begin the pre-registration process before presenting themselves physically at the designated centres.

Observers note that continuous voter registration has become increasingly significant in Nigeria’s democratic development, especially ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Analysts argue that expanding access to registration will play a critical role in determining voter turnout and political participation in the coming years.

INEC reiterated its commitment to transparency and inclusiveness, assuring Nigerians that no eligible voter will be denied the chance to register.

The commission stressed that the exercise is designed to prepare early, avoid the rush often seen before elections, and guarantee that Nigerians’ votes truly count.

For many, the success of the exercise will determine how well the country’s electoral process evolves, especially as citizens grow more vocal about their democratic rights.
